In Japanese neutron scattering facilities, some SE equipment that are frequently used at an instrument, such as the closed-cycle refrigerator (CCR), have been prepared for the instrument as standard SE. They are operated for user experiments by the instrument group. The advantage of this practice is that they can optimize the design of the SE for the instrument and can directly respond to users' requests. On the other hand, the SE team in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC has managed commonly used SE to allow neutron experiments with more advanced SE. In this report, recent SE in the MLF is introduced. Highlighted are the SE in BL11, BL19, BL21 and BL17 and other SE recently progressed by the SE team.

1-MW pulsed Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS) at J-PARC

Futakawa, Masatoshi; Maekawa, Fujio; Sakamoto, Shinichi

Neutron News, 22(1), p.15 - 19, 2011/03

The first neutrons at the Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS) of J-PARC were recorded on 30 May 2008 and in December, MLF welcomed the first users. The proton beam power as of 2010 is 120 kW, and is being increased to 1-MW. During commissioning operation, we could confirm the validity of our design in terms of neuronic performance. However, under even the low power condition, we faced some unexpected events such as instabilities in the cryogenic hydrogen system, and unexpectedly high radiation level in some equipments. Continuous investigations and improvements were carried out to understand and solve each trouble. In order to reach the 1-MW power source we have to address some R&D issues, i.e. pressure wave mitigation technique at the mercury target system, proton beam profile flattening technique, development of a low activation decoupler material, and others.

The Road to J-PARC and the present

Arai, Masatoshi

Neutron News, 22(1), p.11 - 14, 2011/02

Although we now have the J-PARC neutron source, JSNS (Japan Spallation Neutron Source), the road to it was never flat but very long, steep and rough to come along. This paper gives an account of the history of developments of pulsed neutron sources in Japan and the importance of international collaboration for the current achievements.

Neutron instruments at J-PARC; Toward the state-of-the-art facility

Kamiyama, Takashi; Suzuya, Kentaro

Neutron News, 22(1), p.20 - 25, 2011/02

Since the construction of the MLF building was completed in April 2007, over ten instruments have been installed in the MLF experimental halls. At 14:25 on May 30th, 2008, the first neutron was detected at one of five Day-One instruments. In July 2008, we called for the first J-PARC general user proposals for the second half of Japanese FY2008. For each of the six instruments, a total of 23 days of experiments were successfully carried out as the first MLF user program. Most recently, the general user proposals for ten instruments were called for the second half of Japanese FY2010 for 60 days. Now (Fall 2010), in addition to the above ten instruments, two more instruments are used by project teams, and we are constructing additional six instruments. Instruments strategy and first data are also reported in this article.

Neutron devices at J-PARC/MLF

Soyama, Kazuhiko; Sakasai, Kaoru; Nakajima, Kenji; Suzuki, Junichi

Neutron News, 22(1), p.26 - 30, 2011/02

A variety of advanced neutron devices has been developed and constructed to fully use intense neutrons at 1 MW pulsed sources and open new science and technology research fields in J-PARC/MLF. Some breakthrough results have been achieved through active cooperations with domestic and international universities and institutes. In this article, new lined detectors and optical devices are reported.

1-MW pulse Spallation Neutron Source(JSNS) of J-PARC

Ikeda, Yujiro

Neutron News, 16(1), p.20 - 24, 2005/01

This article gives an overview of the 1-MW spallation neutron source (JSNS) to be constructed as the neutorn user facility under the J-PARC project. The most updated design status is described with emphasis of the key concepts adopted in target, moderator, reflector, shielding, etc. A critical technical issue on the pitting event inthe mercury target is also highlighted because of its serious impact on the target lifetime estimation.
