Ionic liquids have unique properties that are quite different from conventional molecular liquids, and have therefore attracted much attention in various fields as novel functional media. When ionic liquids are used as extraction media in solvent extraction, they can also act as "liquid ion exchangers", and it is thus expected to exhibit superior extractability and separability compared with those in conventional organic solvent systems. The author has focused on these characteristics of ionic liquids, and have studied on the extraction separation of metal ions using ionic liquids as extraction media, with the aim of developing highly efficient solvent extraction systems. This article presents the evaluation of the solvent properties of ionic liquids in metal ion extraction, the separation of rare earth metals by the synergistic effect in ionic liquid systems, and the development of a macrocyclic extractant and the structure analysis of the metal complex extracted into the ionic liquid.

Development of metal separating reagents with high selectivity is necessary for efficient separation and recovery of valuable metals contained in industrial wastes, and removal and detection of toxic metals. We have developed novel metal separating ligands with a diglycolamic acid (DGAA) framework. The ligands have a tridentate coordination structure consisting of an amide group and a carboxy group connected by an ether chain and provide a metal separation ability superior to that of commercial ligands. Since the ligands can be synthesized simply in one step, this helps to reduce the production costs of the ligands. In the present review article, we report the extraction characteristics of DGAA-type ligand for 56 kinds of metal ions, extraction separation of rare-earth metal ions, and removal of toxic metal ions. Furthermore, a one-pot biological approach to fabricate DGAA-decorated gold nanoparticles has been developed using the DGAA-type ligand fused to the N-terminus of a gold-binding peptide. It was found that the DGAA-decorated gold nanoparticles can act as a high-sensitive colorimetric sensor for detecting toxic metal ions with color change.

This paper describes the case of Japan Atomic Energy Agency Library, as an example to improve our library database that is user friendly. We are providing the JAEA R&D information through the JAEA Originated Papers Searching System (JOPSS). We have two main issues to solve aiming at improving the usability of JOPSS; (1) to consider how our target users find our contents, (2) to improve user interface of contents. We will continue to improve the dissemination of the JAEA R&D information.

The Library of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has developed the special website on Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station accident and started the website from April 4, 2011. This website disseminates over 23,000 bibliographic and full-text records, such as JAEA's research results, academic journal articles, conference papers, technical reports etc. JAEA library started to collect and prepare bibliographic information of Internet information of Japanese Government-based organizations, TEPCO as well as of oral presentations of responsible nuclear related Associations in regard to the accident not to be disappeared, inaccessible. And we organize this information by classifying with Taxonomy for Nuclear Accident which was developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). We launched the Fukushima Nuclear Accident Archive in June 2014. In this paper, the author introduces the experience in developing special website on Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station accident as well as Fukushima Nuclear Accident Archive and issues to develop the archive and future plan.
