Zinc nanoparticles (NPs) of 10 nm in diameter were irradiated with 200 MeV Xe$$^{14+}$$ ions with various fluences. The shape elongation of the NPs and the mean inter-particle (IP) distance were evaluated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in the transmission configuration using synchrotron X-ray of 18 keV. The azimuth angle dependence of SAXS signal, which was isotropic for unirradiated state, changed to anisotropic. It indicated that the NPs collectively deformed from spheres to spheroids.

Quantum critical magnetization behaviors of kagome- and triangular-lattice antiferromagnets

Physica Status Solidi (B), 250(3), p.579 - 582, 2013/01

The magnetization processes of the kagome- and triangular-lattice antiferromagnets are investigated by the numerical diagonalization and the finite-size scaling analysis. Particularly, we focus on anomalous quantum critical phenomena around 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. Our previous work suggested that the kagome-lattice antiferromagnet exhibits a new field induced phase transition called a magnetization ramp, while the triangular-lattice one has a conventional magnetization plateau. In this work, we consider an extended lattice model including both of the kagome- and triangular-lattice systems and investigate a quantum phase transition between the magnetization ramp and plateau.

In order to diagnose the quantum critical behaviour in heavy fermion systems, the Gaussian spin-spin relaxation time $$T_{2G}$$ determined by NMR spin-echo decay measurements is found to be useful. Combined with the spin-lattice relaxation time $$T_1$$, an exponent $$phi$$ of quantity $$T_1T/T_{2G}^2 sim T^{phi}$$ is predicted to be sensitive to the type of quantum criticality. In fact in heavy fermion USn$$_3$$ near the quantum critical point, $$T_1T/T_{2G}^2$$ is found to be constant as expected for the $$3D$$-SDW magnetic instability.

We succeeded in growing high-quality single crystals of a heavy electron compound YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. The electronic specific heat coefficient $$gamma$$ is determined to be 150 mJ/K$$^2cdot$$mol, which is consistent with the $$A$$ value of the electrical resistivity from Kadowaki-Woods relation. We succeeded in observing the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations. The dHvA frequencies and large cyclotron effective masses in YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ are highly different from those in a non-4$$f$$ reference compound YCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. From these dHvA results, the heavy electron state of YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ is characterized by the large contribution of 4$$f$$-electrons to the volume of the Fermi surface and also to the strong enhancement of effective mass caused by the spin fluctuations.

Field-induced nematic phase in the spin ladder system with easy-axis anisotropy

Physica Status Solidi (B), 247(3), p.583 - 585, 2010/03

The spin ladder system with the easy-axis anisotropy in magnetic field is theoretically investigated using the numerically exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the finite-size scaling analysis. It is found that the field-induced nematic phase appears above the critical field. In addition, there exists another critical field at which the quantum phase transition from the nematic phase to the conventional field-induced Tomonaga- Luttinger liquid phase occurs. The phase diagram on the coupling anisotropy versus magnetization plane is given by the numerical diagonalization. Furthermore, a typical magnetization curve calculated by the DMRG is presented.

Intrinsic defects in silicon carbide (SiC) were indentified using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). The samples used in this study were cubic (3C) and hexagonal (4H, 6H) SiC. The angular dependence of hyperfine structure of $$^{29}$$Si, $$^{13}$$C was compared to the results from the first principle calculations As the results, positively charged carbon vacancies in $$h$$ and $$k$$ sites (V$$_{C}$$$$^{+}$$($$h$$), V$$_{C}$$$$^{+}$$($$k$$)), negatively charged carbon vacancy (V$$_{C}$$$$^{-}$$($$h$$)), and neutoral, positively and negatively charged di-vacancies of silicon vacancy and carbon vacancy ([V$$_{Si}$$V$$_{C}$$]$$^{0}$$, [V$$_{Si}$$V$$_{C}$$]$$^{+}$$, [V$$_{Si}$$V$$_{C}$$]$$^{-}$$) were identified.

We have investigated the effect of the field cooling on the exchange bias and the coercivity in an exchange-biased Fe/Cr(100) bilayer using SQUID magnetometer. After the field cooling, magnetization shifted upwards, indicative of surplus magnetic moments, which could be interpreted as an evidence of pinned and uncompensated Cr magnetic moments induced by the cooling field. Interestingly enough, we also discovered that not all the pinned and uncompensated spins seem to be involved in producing the exchange bias, although they contribute to increasing the coercivity and inducing the surplus magnetization.

Luminescence propeties of Tb-doped Al$$_{x}$$Ga$$_{1-x}$$N were studied. The samples were grown on sapphire substrates using OMVPE. Tb implantation was cariied out to introduce Tb into samples. After implantation, samples were annealed at 1000 to 1150 $$^{o}$$C in 10% NH$$_{3}$$ diluted with N$$_{2}$$. The luminescence intensity for Al$$_{x}$$Ga$$_{1-x}$$N x=0.1 is 5 times stronger than that for x=0 at 14 K. The luminesecence intensity for GaN rapidly decreases with temperature and its activation enegy is 7.8 meV. With increasing Al content, the activation enegy increases, and the activation energy for Al$$_{0.1}$$Ga$$_{0.9}$$N is 70 meV.
