The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) refers to the generation of a spin current as a result of a temperature gradient in magnetic materials including insulators. The SSE is applicable to thermoelectric generation because the thermally generated spin current can be converted into a charge current via spin-orbit interaction in conductive materials adjacent to the magnets. The insulator-based SSE device exhibits unconventional characteristics potentially useful for thermoelectric applications, such as simple structure, device-design exibility, and convenient scaling capability. In this article, we review recent studies on the SSE from the viewpoint of thermoelectric applications.

This paper describes the design and implementation of the Switching Network Unit (SNU) for the superconducting Central Solenoid coils of the international nuclear fusion experiment JT-60SA to be built in Naka, Japan. The SNU can interrupt a current up to 20 kA in less than 1 ms to create a voltage up to 5 kV. It is realized with a hybrid switch integrating an electro-mechanical device and a solid state Static Circuit Breaker, parallel connected. SNU resistance can be pre-arranged and dynamically reduced by a solid state making switch. Preliminary test results confirmed the current balance of the multiple parallel branches constituting the solid state switch and proper behavior of the devices, confirming simulations results. Further applications could be medium voltage DC networks (either naval or land based); higher DC voltages are practicable.


Monte Carlo simulations of photon absorbed fractions in a frog voxel phantom

For radiation protection of the environment, a voxel-based frog phantom was developed using cryosection data, which have been available on a website of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The voxel-based frog phantom has a mass of 33.7g. In the present study, the voxel-based frog phantom was applied to evaluating photon AFs in the segmented organs/tissues. The sources were assumed to be monoenergetic in the photon energy range from 10 keV to 4 MeV. The radiation transport was simulated using the Monte Carlo method. Consequently, it was confirmed that the photon AFs for organ self-absorption are dependent on the masses of the source/target organs. It would appear that the photon AFs for organ self-absorption are expressed by a continuous function of photon energy emitted by the source. The photon AFs for organ cross-fire might be subject to the geometry effect such as size and shape of source/target and distance between the source and target.
