We conducted ray irradiation test using simulated carbonate slurry to investigate the cause of stagnant water over the high integrity container (HIC). This test was performed at Co-60 irradiation facility in Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute. We observed a rise in water level, air bubbles in the slurry, a supernatant when the carbonate slurry with 95 g/L density was irradiated by
ray at a dose rate of 8.5 kGy/h. The cause of the rise in water level was regarded as the volume expansion by the gas retention of the carbonate slurry. It was suggested that the cause of stagnant water over the high integrity container might be the volume expansion by the gas retention.

Modification of materials by irradiation, which is substantially important for radiation safety in facilities and industrial applications, is studied from various aspects. Material modification is induced by local energy deposition by incident radiation followed by the changes of chemical bonds in the spatial scale of nm to m. So far, absorbed dose was regarded as the best index of irradiation effects, however, it is also known that irradiation effects varies depending on the radiation species even under the same absorbed dose or LET. Radiation transport simulation code PHITS can calculate simulate energy deposition in nm to
m scale to obtain LET and specific energy deposition (SED). By using SED calculation function, an attempt to reproduce radiation species dependence of material property change based on the theoretical prediction of chemical reactions induced by energy deposition in different irradiation conditions. Estimate on the decrease in Elongation at Break (EB) of poly-ether sulfone in three different irradiation conditions, 10 MeV protons, 50 MeV
He and
C showed that reduction of EB by carbon ions is twice as small as that by proton and that by helium for the same absorbed dose, which is in an agreement with experiment. Moreover, assuming that scission of polymer takes place at random and 100 eV energy deposition in the region result in loss of mechanical strength, saturating trend of EB reduction.

Understanding the stage of mountain building is crucial to the stability assessment of geological environments in geological disposal system. In this context, we have carried out the research and development of provenance analysis techniques to elucidate the mountain-building stage. Here we present the results focusing on the R&D using the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) signals from quartz in sediments and their basement rocks.

Radiation Tolerance of semiconductor components on the shelf, utilized on the robots for emergency response or decommissioning in nuclear facilities, should be estimated. Just after the Fukushima Daiichi NPPs accidents occurred, a guideline, of irradiation tolerance estimation and management method of semiconductor components on the shelf, was tried to be made based on the old database developed in the course of Bilateral Servo Manipulator under the high radiation and high contamination environments. The estimation was conservative, because the data in the database were old and mainly based on the test results of silicon semiconductors. Ga-As Semiconductors are coming major recently, and expected to be higher radiation tolerance. For those reason, present semiconductor devices have irradiated and the irradiation tolerance have estimated.

Recent investigation examined by JAEA showed that a gas bubble bounded by facets is formed in UO during a process of a precipitation of helium followed by injection with HIP. The interest phenomena they found is that the shape of the negative crystal changes depending on the inner pressure of cavity, which implies that the shape of the cavity can be transformed by controlling the condition of helium release followed by the injection. This paper addresses the detailed observation of the gas bubble formation in the thin film using STEM.

The spent fuel stored in the storage pools at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. is exposed with the environment containing seawater components, owing to the injection of seawater into the storage pools. Therefore, during reprocessing, it is expected that the spent fuel will be contaminated with seawater components, and the influence of seawater on reprocessing needs to be investigated. We conducted the corrosion tests of the HAW storage tanks under -ray irradiation, and revealed that no significant effect of seawater components was emerged.
