Hydrogenation reaction of aluminum and aluminum-based alloys at high pressures and high temperatures

Hydrogenation reaction of aluminum was achieved using cubic-type multi-anvils apparatus. The reaction was investigated by ${it in-situ}$ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction measurement. The reaction pressure-temperature diagram was obtained by the measurements and was confirmed to agree with thermodynamical calculation. Aluminum-based alloy hydrides have been explored using the technique because it allows hydrogenation reaction of the alloys with chemically stable surface oxide layer.

The technical present status of hydrogen production process using IS thermochemical cycle was introduced. This process is experimentally investigated in Japan, U.S.A., Germany, France, Italy, India, China and Korea. Japan Atomic Energy Agency succeeded in consecutive hydrogen production as a proof examination. The trend of the research and development about the reactions, separation technology, device materials and the process equipment were reported. Thermochemical ammonia production cycle was also introduced. This new cycle is named ISN cycle which was modified from IS cycle in order to produce ammonia from water and nitrogen.

Outline of the study on thermochemical IS process for hydrogen production performed by the IS process technology group of JAEA was described in the field of closed-loop continuous hydrogen production, screening of corrosion-resistant materials of construction, development of chemical reactors made of ceramics, and improvement of hydrogen production efficiency.

Advanced research on hydrogen storage materials using synchrotron radiation light sources

Science and technology concerning hydrogen storage materials are advancing towards the nanometer scale. X-rays, which have wave lengths matched to this length scale, are an ideal tool to study materials in nanometer scale. SPring-8, the world-biggest synchrotron radiation facility, provides ultra-brilliant, high-directional, polarized and pulsed X-rays. These excellent lights enable us to investigate precisely, accurately and even time dependently the structural and electronic properties of materials on hydrogenation and/or dehydrogenation. We present the synchrotron radiation based X-rays experiments that are powerful and useful particularly for the functional study of hydrogen storage materials. The latest results on metal hydrides are presented as example.
