Accurate data of $$gamma$$-ray emission probabilities are frequently needed when one quantitatively determines the amount of isotope by $$gamma$$-ray measurements or obtains neutron capture cross-sections using them. Americium-243, one of the most important minor actinides, produces $$^{244}$$Am after neutron capture. The 744-keV $$gamma$$-ray decaying from the ground state of $$^{244}$$Am has a relatively large $$gamma$$-ray emission probability c.a. 66%, however, its uncertainty is as large as 29%. The uncertainty of the $$gamma$$-ray emission probability leads to a major factor of the systematic uncertainty on determining an amount of isotope, and therefore the $$gamma$$-ray emission probability was measured by using an activation method and an examined level structure of $$^{244}$$Cm. In this study, the emission probability of 744-keV $$gamma$$ ray was derived as 66.5$$pm$$1.1%, and its uncertainty was improved from 29% to 2%.

Influence of gamma-ray irradiation on mechanical property of YSZ for oxygen sensors in ADS

Okubo, Nariaki; Okuno, Yasuki; Kitamura, Akane; Taguchi, Tomitsugu*

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B, 435, p.198 - 202, 2018/11

Accelerator driven system (ADS) adopts the lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as both coolant and spallation target. The oxygen concentration control is one of the most important technical developments. Estimation of durability under gamma-ray irradiation for the oxygen sensor is necessary for the integrity evaluation of ADS components. The Zirconia added by Yttria (YSZ) is the main element in oxygen sensor. Effect of gamma-ray irradiation on the mechanical property and structural change for three types of YSZ with 3, 6, 8 mol% Yttria was evaluated by using 4 points bend test, XRD, SEM and Raman spectroscope. The gamma-ray irradiations were conducted at 1 and 2 kGy/h, which corresponded to the LBE activity after 1 year ADS operation. In the cases of 8Y and 6Y, degradation of strength was not measured and the fracture surface did not change the morphology. In the case of 3Y, however, the strength did not change but phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic crystal structure was observed in XRD results, depending on the irradiation dose. This implies that the gamma-ray irradiation causes the phase transformation in 3Y-YSZ.

Characterization of phosphate cement irradiated by $$gamma$$-ray during dehydration

Irisawa, Keita; Kudo, Isamu*; Taniguchi, Takumi; Namiki, Masahiro*; Osugi, Takeshi; Nakazawa, Osamu

QST-M-8; QST Takasaki Annual Report 2016, P. 63, 2018/03

A solidification technique with minimized water content is being developed using a phosphate cement for safe storage of secondary radioactive wastes in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. To understand the applicability of the solidification technique for the actual secondary wastes, phosphate cement during dehydration was irradiated by $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray. The G(H$$_{2}$$) for the phosphate cement decreased with time during dehydration, and was not detected after 7 days. Moreover, the $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray irradiation during dehydration did not change the crystalline and amorphous phases of the phosphate cement.

Under severe accidents, high-integrity transmission techniques are necessary so as to monitor the situation of the nuclear power plant. In this study, effects of gamma irradiation up to 10$$^{6}$$Gy on properties of optical devices were evaluated toward the development of a radiation-resistant in-water wireless transmission system using visible light. After the irradiation, for the LEDs, the total luminous flux decreased and the browning of resin lenses occurred. Meanwhile, the current-voltage characteristics hardly changed. For the PDs, the light sensitivity decreased and the browning of resin window occurred. The dark currents of PDs did not become large enough to adversely affect transmission. These results indicated that both the decreases of the total luminous flux of the LEDs and the light sensitivity of the PDs were mainly caused by not the degradation of the semiconductor parts but the browning of the resin parts by the irradiation. In addition, basic decrease behaviors of light transmission of several different types of glasses by gamma irradiation were also obtained so as to select the suitable optical windows and filters for the developing radiation-resistant in-water wireless transmission system.

The release and transport behaviors of 13 non-gamma-emitting fission products (FPs) and actinides in steam and hydrogen atmospheres were investigated based on the chemical analysis of their deposits on the components of VERCORS test loops. The new findings were obtained; strontium release was significantly enhanced in hydrogen atmosphere and a part of released strontium was transported towards the lower temperature region, uranium release was enhanced in steam atmosphere but most of released uranium deposited at high temperature region.

Proceedings of 14th International Congress of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA-14), Vol.3 (Internet), p.1078 - 1085, 2017/11

After the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March 2011, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency has newly set up a laboratory for radioactivity analysis in Fukushima. At the laboratory, radioactivity concentrations of environmental samples such as soil, water, dust filter, plant, etc., approximately 1,000 samples in a month, are measured with high-resolution $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry systems. The systems employ n-type HPGe detectors from Ortec. Since September 2012, characterization and upgrade of the systems have been performed aimed at enhancing reliability of analysis and convenience of customers. Resolving both systematic and technical issues, the laboratory has been accredited the ISO/IEC 17025 standard as a testing laboratory for radioactivity analysis.
