To evaluate the effect of oxidants, which are formed by radiolysis of water under gamma ray irradiation, on the corrosion of a carbon steel in humid environment, ozone was introduced as a model oxidant in to humidity-controlled air at 50$$^{circ}$$C in a thermo-hygrostat chamber. Corrosion monitoring was performed by using an Atmospheric Corrosion Monitor-type (ACM) sensor consisting of a carbon steel anode and an Ag cathode. The output current of the ACM sensor was increased with the increase in relative humidity and it was obviously increased with the increase in the introduced ozone concentration at each relative humidity. The results indicate that ozone accelerates the corrosion of the carbon steel. The effect of ozone on the corrosion acceleration is attributed to the fast reduction reaction and fast dissolution reaction in to water compared to that of oxygen.

A detector identification method using waveform-shape analysis is proposed. A method for enabling discrimination of detectors by making a characteristic waveform shape for every detector by each own loop circuit on the detector is shown as an example. This method can be applied in many experimental contexts with detectors, making a high counting rate possible. Moreover, detector identification can be used for other important questions such as detector position. As an example, this detector identification method is used to perform positron-annihilation age-momentum correlation measurement with a high temporal resolution and a high counting rate.

Accurate data of $$gamma$$-ray emission probabilities are frequently needed when one quantitatively determines the amount of isotope by $$gamma$$-ray measurements or obtains neutron capture cross-sections using them. Americium-243, one of the most important minor actinides, produces $$^{244}$$Am after neutron capture. The 744-keV $$gamma$$-ray decaying from the ground state of $$^{244}$$Am has a relatively large $$gamma$$-ray emission probability c.a. 66%, however, its uncertainty is as large as 29%. The uncertainty of the $$gamma$$-ray emission probability leads to a major factor of the systematic uncertainty on determining an amount of isotope, and therefore the $$gamma$$-ray emission probability was measured by using an activation method and an examined level structure of $$^{244}$$Cm. In this study, the emission probability of 744-keV $$gamma$$ ray was derived as 66.5$$pm$$1.1%, and its uncertainty was improved from 29% to 2%.

Influence of gamma-ray irradiation on mechanical property of YSZ for oxygen sensors in ADS

Accelerator driven system (ADS) adopts the lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as both coolant and spallation target. The oxygen concentration control is one of the most important technical developments. Estimation of durability under gamma-ray irradiation for the oxygen sensor is necessary for the integrity evaluation of ADS components. The Zirconia added by Yttria (YSZ) is the main element in oxygen sensor. Effect of gamma-ray irradiation on the mechanical property and structural change for three types of YSZ with 3, 6, 8 mol% Yttria was evaluated by using 4 points bend test, XRD, SEM and Raman spectroscope. The gamma-ray irradiations were conducted at 1 and 2 kGy/h, which corresponded to the LBE activity after 1 year ADS operation. In the cases of 8Y and 6Y, degradation of strength was not measured and the fracture surface did not change the morphology. In the case of 3Y, however, the strength did not change but phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic crystal structure was observed in XRD results, depending on the irradiation dose. This implies that the gamma-ray irradiation causes the phase transformation in 3Y-YSZ.
