The neutron-rich nucleus $$^{50}$$Ar is produced by the fragmentation reactions of $$^{54}$$Ca, $$^{55}$$Sc, and $$^{56}$$Ti at the RIBF facility in RIKEN, and its deexcited $$gamma$$ rays are observed for the first time. The first $$2^+$$ level in $$^{50}$$Ar is identified to lie at 1178(18)keV from the most intense $$gamma$$-ray spectra. This experimental data, together with the systematics of the $$2^+$$ levels for surrounding nuclei, is analyzed with large-scale shell-model calculations. Consequently, the $$N=32$$ sub-shell gap in $$^{50}$$Ar is equivalent to that of $$^{52}$$Ca, thus making the $$2^+$$ level in $$^{50}$$Ar higher than that of $$^{48}$$Ar. The shell-model calculation also predicts that the $$N=34$$ sub-shell gap enhances in going from Ca to Ar, which will be verified by forthcoming experiments for $$^{52}$$Ar.

The neutron-rich isotope $$^{70}$$Ni was produced by multi-nucleon transfer reactions of $$^{70}$$Zn in the Argonne National Laboratory, and an in-beam $$gamma$$-ray experiment were performed using the GRETINA array. The $$2^+_2$$ and $$4^+_2$$ levels of $$^{70}$$Ni were observed for the first time. Those levels are regarded as large deformed states associated with proton excitation from the $$f_{7/2}$$ orbit because they cannot be reproduced by a shell-model calculation assuming a small valence space without $$f_{7/2}$$. A theoretical analysis based on the Monte Carlo shell model published in 2014 indicates that those levels corresponds to a prolate deformed band. The present result demonstrates the occurrence of shape coexistence in neutron-rich Ni isotopes other than a known case of $$^{68}$$Ni, and confirms the predictive power of the Monte Carlo shell-model calculation.

We perform large-scale shell-model calculations for unnatural-parity high-spin states in neutron-rich Cr and Fe isotopes with $$N$$ = 31-35. The excitation energies of the $$9/2^+_1$$ states for those odd-mass nuclei sharply decrease with the neutron number, which attracts much interest. In this study, we calculate those unnatural-parity states systematically using an effective interaction comprised of existing ones plus minimal modifications. The calculated energy levels excellently agree with experimental data. The deformations of those isotopes are analysed by using the wave functions obtained by the shell-model calculations. We show that prolate deformation dominates this region, contrary to the previous suggestion based on the $$9/2^+_1$$ isomeric level. It is demonstrated that the sharp decrease of the $$9/2^+_1$$ levels occurs due to the rising of the Fermi surface, but not due to the evolution of the $$g_{9/2}$$ single-particle level as suggested previously.
