Visualization and measurement of multiphase flow by neutron radiography

Kureta, Masatoshi

Kagaku Kogaku, 80(8), p.464 - 467, 2016/08

A neutron radiography is technology which carries out visualization and measurement of the inside of a substance using neutrons. This technology has the complementary feature comparing with X-ray radiography (Roentgen technique). In this review paper, the measurement principle, some application examples such as visualization of oil in the working car engine, and about the leading-edge technology using high-intensity proton beam accelerator facility J-PARC (common neutron imaging facility), etc. It was introduced in the form where the whole neutron radiography technology for every dimension of measurement were covered.

Neutron radiography is useful to inspect macroscopic change in nuclear fuels before and after irradiation. We have been investigated the practicality of neutron imaging plate and neutron CT methods for the inspection of the spent fuels. A fresh UO2 fuel rod was examined by those methods. The test results of those samples are available to develop the system of those methods for the spent fuels and to determine the specifications of the system. Some good images of those samples are obtained by those examinations. The shape of the pellets in the fuel rod is clearly recognized in the image. Those images are analyzed to estimate the size of some parts in the fuel pellets.

Neutron radiography is one of effective tools to determine hydrided region in Zircaloy cladding tubes. In this work, the practicability of the neutron radiography for hydrogen analysis is further investigated by using standard samples with known hydrogen concentration. Local hydrogen concentration in hydrided Zircaloy tube is quantitatively estimated using the standard samples by neutron imaging plate (NIP) method. The local area is equivalent to a picture element in the image; e.g., 0.1mm$$times$$0.1mm. In addition, contribution of an oxide film in the tubes to the images is investigated using oxidized samples with hydrides or no hydride. In NIP images of oxidized tube no oxide film was recognized. Numerical image analysis also shows no effect of the oxide film on the image. These results show that the influence of oxygen on image contrast can be neglected when hydrogen analysis is performed on the Zircaloy tube with oxide film and hydrides by NIP method.

Advanced neutron radiography techniques such as neutron imaging plate (NIP) and Computed Tomography (CT) methods have been investigated the practicality for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE). In this work, an unirradiated fuel rod was examined by NIP and CT methods in order to collect the fundamental data for applying these techniques to PIE.The fuel rod is composed of seven-enriched UO2 pellet and two-natural UO2 pellet that are loaded into a Zircaloy tube. There are somewhat difference in the size and shape among those UO2 pellets. A transmitted and cross-sectional images were obtained by NIP and CT methods, respectively. In the NIP image, the difference in the size, shape, and enrichment among the UO2 pellets is obviously recognized. In the case of CT method, the images clearly show the detailed shape of the cross section in the pellets, in addition, the difference in the enrichment between the natural and enriched pellets is recognized.

Performance of a multi-wavelength monochromator system for neutron single-crystal and powder diffraction

Ahmed, F. U.*; Tanaka, Ichiro; Niimura, Nobuo

Journal of Applied Crystallography, 33(Part.2), p.291 - 295, 2000/04

In order to improve significantly data collection efficiency, the advantages of using multi-wavelengths in single-crystal neutron diffraction as well as in powder neutron diffraction were established by experiments using a stacked monochromator assembly of two elastically bent perfect Si(111) and Si(220) crystals. The TAS-2 spectrometer on JRR-3M at JAERI was employed for these experiments. Each crystal was elastically bent in order to increase the flux density at the sample position. Two wavelengths, $$lambda$$1=1.80$AA for Si(220) and $lambda$$2=2.94$AA for Si(111), were selected. With the neutron imaging plate (NIP) detector, it was possible to aquire multiple reflections simultaneously with better intensity, better statistics and higher spatial resolution with an open geometry. As a single crystal sample an organic compound piperidine cobaloxime was used. For the systems investigated in this study, it was possible to assign unambiguously rings or spots to diffraction by $lambda$$1 or by $$lambda$$2 in the case of powder and single-crystal diffraction on the NIP.
