Freeze-concentrated layers as a unique field for the formation of hydrogels

Sekine, Yurina; Nankawa, Takuya

The phase separation of ice crystals and solutes and bound water that occurs during freezing can be used as a reaction field to control a hierarchical structure of hydrogels. Here, we present a study of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofiber (CMCF) hydrogels formed using the solid-quasi liquid phase separation. CMCF hydrogels were formed simply by adding citric acid to frozen CMCF and thawing the mixture. It was found that rearrangement of CMCF structures via hydrogen bonding proceeds in the freeze concentration layer before the ice crystals melt. Under freeze concentration, CMCF and bound water are confined at high concentrations. The crosslinking reaction in such a unique space contributed to the formation of CMCF hydrogel with high mechanical strength. We discuss the gelation behavior and properties of freeze crosslinked CMCF hydrogels and their applications.

Neutron science for competiveness of Japan

Oigawa, Hiroyuki

Shiki, 59, P. 1, 2023/06

There are the world's leading neutron science research facilities, J-PARC and JRR-3, in Tokai-mura. In order to convey the value created by these facilities to the public, it is important for users to appeal their achievements.

To be a global center for neutron utilization; Resumption of operation of JRR-3

Endo, Akira

Hokeikyo Nyusu, (68), P. 1, 2021/10

This article introduces resumption of utilization of the research reactor JRR-3 at the Nuclear Science Research Institute, JAEA. JRR-3 resumed its operation in July 2021 for the first time in 10 years and 7 months, after the confirmation of its conformity to the new regulatory requirements established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission following the accident at the TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March 2011. JRR-3 is expected to produce many research results in academic and industrial applications as a research center for neutron science in collaboration with the Materials and Life Science Facility (MFL) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC).

What should we learn from the back numbers of HAMON ?

Takeda, Masayasu

Hamon, 30(1), p.7 - 8, 2020/02

Safety review of JRR-3 under the New Regulatory Requirements was completed on 7th November 2018. Neutron beam will come back in early 2021 after reinforcement works of the roof of the reactor building, the peripheral structures like a stack, a cooling tower, and the experimental hall. The future of neutron sciences using the research reactor strongly depends on how many impacted researches using JRR-3 are achieved after restarting JRR-3. At this stage, we can learn a lot of things from the back numbers of HAMON.

Since J-PARC started operation for user programs with high-intensity pulsed neutron beams, many material and life science studies have been carried out at J-PARC. Since partial or complete deuteration of organic compounds for contrast variation in the scattering length densities of materials is one of the most effective techniques in the application of neutron scattering analysis, deuterated materials have led to significant progress in our understanding of the structure of novel organic materials. Aiming at accelerating development of deuteration activities in our country, an international workshop "Deuterated Materials Enhancing Neutron Science for Structure Function Applications" was held as a J-PARC Workshop at Ibaraki Quantum Beam Research Center from 19th October to 20th October in 2017. In this workshop, the chemical/biological deuteration activities and recent scientific results of deuterated materials enhancing neutron study in Japan and other countries were discussed by domestic/foreign deuteration and neutron scientists. This is a report of the workshop summarized by organizers.
