Neutron moderation, 1; Research reactor as neutron source

A thermal neutron reactor operates by the fission of uranium, a nuclear reaction which produces neutrons of energies in the range of MeV. This is far too high an energy to be useful for neutron scattering experiments. Therefore in a research reactor which has neutron beam utilization there are moderators arranged around the primary source to slow down the source neutrons to useful energies. Additionally almost major research reactors include at least one cold neutron source, a special moderator maintained at cryogenic temperature, where neutrons can equilibrate to lower average energies.

The methodology to derive cross section data from measurements in a cold neutron beam was studied. Mostly, capture cross sections at thermal energy are derived relative to a standard cross section, and proportionality between the standard and the measured cross section is often assumed. Due to this assumption the derived capture cross section at thermal energy can be biased by more than 10%. Evidently the bias depends on how much the energy dependence of the cross section deviates from a direct proportionality with the inverse of the neutron speed. The effect is reduced in case the cross section is not derived at thermal energy but at an energy close to the average energy of the cold neutron beam. Nevertheless, it is demonstrated that the bias can only be avoided in case the energy dependence of the cross section is known and proper correction factors are applied. In some cases the results can also be biased when the attenuation of the neutron beam within the sample is neglected in the analysis. Some of the cross section data reported in the literature suffer from such bias effects.

By combining neutron activation analysis with multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection, we have proved better sensitivity and resolution for the trace element analysis than the ordinary single $$gamma$$-ray detection method. We now try to apply the multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection method to the prompt $$gamma$$-ray analysis (PGA). We have established a new cold neutron beam line for PGA in Japan Research Reactor, JRR-3M, at Tokai establishment of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute(JAERI). It consists of a beam shutter, a beam attenuator, a $$gamma$$-ray detector array, a sample changer, and a beam stopper. We construct a high-efficiency $$gamma$$-ray detector array specially designed for this purpose. Its performance has been evaluated with the Monte Carlo simulation code, GEANT 4.5.0.

The recommended k$$_{0}$$ factors for 81 $$gamma$$-lines of 24 elements, which are useful for neutron induced prompt $$gamma$$-ray analysis (PGA) and are not influenced by neutron spectrum difference, were obtained from the k$$_{0}$$ factors measured with the cold and thermal guided neutron beams of JRR-3M by statistical calculation. The prompt $$gamma$$-ray emission probabilities were derived from the recommended k$$_{0}$$-factors using atomic weight, isotopic abundance and thermal neutron cross-section of other nuclear constants consisting the k$$_{0}$$ factors, for which one can obtain accurate data. The derived $$gamma$$-ray emission probabilities for the light elements (H to Ca) well agreed within $$pm$$10% with those of the ENSDF, which reflect recent data, which the agreements for heavy elements (Ti to Pb) were $$pm$$40% with those of the ENSDF, which are still composed of old data.
