For understandings of nuclear criticality risks of TRIGA fuel rods and review of safety measures for handling them, nuclear criticality characteristics for infinite and finite heterogeneous lattice systems composed of the NSRR fuel rods were re-evaluated with the use of a detailed computational model for the fuel rod. The MVP version 3 code was used with the JENDL libraries including the latest version, JENDL-5, for the re-evaluation. As the criticality characteristics, variations of neutron multiplication factors of the infinite and water-reflected finite systems were examined in detail with parameters of the lattice pitch and density of moderator water. From the results of the re-evaluated criticality characteristics, the minimum critical number of fuel rods for the water-reflected hexagonal shaped lattice system was obtained to be 46.8 $$pm$$ 0.2 using the JENDL-5 library. Moreover, the attainability of criticality without the water as moderator and reflector was examined because the zirconium hydride moderator and graphite reflector are equipped with the TRIGA fuel rod. It was found that the criticality is possible to be attained by 115.7 $$pm$$ 0.6 of the number of fuel rods, which is the smaller number of fuel rods than loaded in the NSRR standard core, even though no water exists.

JAEA-Research-2025-001.pdf:1.98MB

The detailed computational models for nuclear criticality analyses on the first startup cores of NSRR (Nuclear Safety Research Reactor), which is categorized as a TRIGA-ACPR (Annular Core Pulse Reactor), were created for the purposes of deeper understandings of safety inspection data on the neutron absorber rod worths of reactivity and improvement of determination technique of the reactivity worths. The uncertainties in effective neutron multiplication factor (k$$_{rm eff}$$) propagated from errors in the geometry, material, and operation data for the present models were evaluated in detail by using the MVP version 3 code with the latest Japanese nuclear data library, JENDL-5, and the previous versions of JENDL libraries. As a result, the overall uncertainties in k$$_{rm eff}$$ for the present models were evaluated to be in the range of 0.0027 to 0.0029 $$Delta$$k$$_{rm eff}$$. It is expected that the present models will be utilized as the benchmark on k$$_{rm eff}$$ for TRIGA-ACPR. Moreover, it is confirmed that the overall uncertainties were sufficiently smaller than the values of absorber rod worths determined in NSRR. Thus, it is also considered that the present models are applicable to further analyses on the absorber rod worths in NSRR.

The elemental composition of the structural materials of nuclear reactor facilities is used as one of the important parameters in activation calculations that are evaluated when formulating decommissioning plans. Regarding the elemental composition of aluminum alloys and other materials used as structural materials for test and research reactors, sufficient data is not available regarding elements other than the major elements. For this reason, samples were collected from aluminum alloy, beryllium, hafnium, and other materials that have been used as the main structural materials of JMTR (Japan Materials Testing Reactor), and their elemental compositions were analyzed. This report summarizes the elemental composition data of 78 elements obtained in FY2023.

Selective resonance ionization of odd calcium isotopes using linearly polarized lasers

Iwata, Yoshihiro; Miyabe, Masabumi; Wells, S. R.*; Yamamoto, Yuta*; Hasegawa, Shuichi*

Proceedings of International Topical Workshop on Fukushima Decommissioning Research 2024 (FDR2024) (Internet), 4 Pages, 2024/10

In this study, triple and double resonance ionization schemes of atomic Ca were developed, aiming for the separation of odd isotopes by (i) laser polarization-dependent selection rules, and (ii) large isotope shifts of odd Ca isotopes in the Rydberg levels. Separation of odd isotopes was confirmed under the orthogonal condition. Suppression of non-resonant ionization of $$^{40}$$Ca by the electric field in the ionization region could further improve the optical isotope selectivity of $$^{41}$$Ca.

Breakup of single droplet induced by high weber number flow behind shock wave

Asahara, Makoto*; Iwasaki, Kodai*; Kamiya, Tomohiro; Mizuno, Kyohei*; Iwatsuki, Kazuma*; Miyasaka, Takeshi*

Konsoryu, 38(2), p.175 - 185, 2024/06

Breakup of a single droplet induced by a high-velocity gas flow behind a shock wave was observed with high spatio-temporal accuracy imaging, and the behavior of fragment formation was observed. In the high Weber number region corresponding to catastrophic breakup, the wavelength of the upstream interfacial wave of the droplet was larger than the critical wavelength of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (wavelength in the stability region), which was roughly consistent with the theoretical wavelength of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Therefore, the upstream interfacial wave of the droplet is generated by the development of small disturbances due to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The measured fragment diffusion widths were found to be independent of the Weber number.

The JENDL-4.0/HE neutron and proton ACE files were produced in 2017 and those of 22 nuclei for neutron and 25 nuclei for proton were bundled in the PHITS code. Recently it was found that the following five data in the JENDL-4.0/HE neutron and proton ACE files had any problems; ACE files for $$^{15}$$N and $$^{18}$$O, heating numbers, damage energy production cross sections, secondary neutron multiplicities and fission cross sections. Thus new JENDL-4.0/HE neutron and proton ACE files were produced with the problems fixed. This paper describes the problems and how to produce the new neutron and proton ACE files in detail.

Calcium Rydberg levels are of significant interest for efficient and isotope-selective resonance ionization of trace radionuclides such as calcium-41 ($$^{41}$$Ca). In this study, we report novel measurement data on the energy level shifts of calcium-43 ($$^{43}$$Ca) for 4sns $$^{1}$$S$$_{0}$$ and 4s(n-1)d $$^{1}$$D$$_{2}$$ (n=40, 45, 50, 55, 60) Rydberg levels due to hyperfine-induced singlet-triplet mixing specific to isotopes with an odd mass number.

The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Nuclear Energy Science & Technology and Human Resource Development Project (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2021. The Project aims to contribute to solving problems in the nuclear energy field represented by the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO). For this purpose, intelligence was collected from all over the world, and basic research and human resource development were promoted by closely integrating/collaborating knowledge and experiences in various fields beyond the barrier of conventional organizations and research fields. The sponsor of the Project was moved from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to JAEA since the newly adopted proposals in FY2018. On this occasion, JAEA constructed a new research system where JAEA-academia collaboration is reinforced and medium-to-long term research/development and human resource development contributing to the decommissioning are stably and consecutively implemented. Among the adopted proposals in FY2018, this report summarizes the research results of the "Development of high-resolution imaging camera for alpha dust" conducted from FY2018 to FY2021. Since the final year of this proposal was FY2021, the results for four fiscal years were summarized. The present study aims to develop a novel alpha-ray camera consisting of imaging and an energy spectrometer to find the alpha dust to reduce the risk of health damage in decommissioning. We have developed the camera with a position resolution of less than 10 $$mu$$m, and the measurement test for the energy spectra was operated using several alpha-ray sources with an unfolding method.

The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Nuclear Energy Science & Technology and Human Resource Development Project (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2021. The Project aims to contribute to solving problems in the nuclear energy field represented by the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F), Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. Among the adopted proposals in FY2019, this report summarizes the research results of the "Measurement methods for the radioactive source distribution inside reactor buildings using a one-dimensional optical fiber radiation sensor" conducted from FY2019 to FY2021. Since the final year of this proposal was FY2021, the results for three fiscal years were summarized. The present study aims to develop an optical fiber type radiation sensor that can measure the radiation distribution one-dimensionally along the fiber under a high radiation field for the decommissioning of 1F. Based on the conventional time-of-flight method, we found several promising sensor candidates for the radiation distribution measurement under high dose rate and many scattered gamma-rays.

Identification of carbon in glassy cesium-bearing microparticles using electron microscopy and formation mechanisms of the microparticles

Hidaka, Akihide

Nuclear Technology, 208(2), p.318 - 334, 2022/02

 Times Cited Count:7 Percentile:50.06(Nuclear Science & Technology)

The author previously proposed that the Cs bearing microparticle (Type A) may have been formed by melting and atomization of glass fibers (GF) of the HEPA filter in the SGTS due to flame and blast during the hydrogen explosion in Unit 3. If this hypothesis is correct, the Type A could contain or accompany carbon (C), that ignites spontaneously above 623 K, because of the limited time to be heated up, inclusion of C in the binder applied on the GF surface and closely located charcoal filter. As the previous studies did not focus on C, the present analyses were performed with EPMA whether the Type A contains C. The results showed that the Type A contained C originating from the binder, and non-spherical particles accompanied by the Type A and the film surrounding the Type A contained more C, which is thought to originate from the charcoal filter. These results cannot be explained by the other mechanisms proposed so far, and can be explained consistently by the author proposed hypothesis.
