One is a surrogate system (SS) that can estimate physical quantities of a nuclear power plant in a computational time of several orders less than a physical simulation model. The other is an abnormal situation identification system (ASIS) that can estimate the state of the disturbance causing an anomaly from physical quantities of a nuclear power plant. Both systems are trained and tested using data obtained from the analytical code for incore and plant dynamics (ACCORD), which reproduces the steady and dynamic behavior of the actual high Temperature engineering test reactor (HTTR) under various scenarios. The DNN models are built by adjusting, the main hyperparameters. Through these procedures, these systems are shown able to perform with a high degree of accuracy.

This study developed a geobotanical remote sensing method for estimating high water table areas such as groundwater discharge points using differences in the growth conditions of forest trees induced by moisture supply from groundwater in a humid warm-temperate forest area. A new vegetation index (VI) termed AgbNDVI (Added green band NDVI) was proposed to discriminate the differences. The AgbNDVI proved to be more sensitive to water stress on green vegetation than existing VIs: SAVI and EVI2, and possessed a strong linear correlation with the vegetation fraction. To validate the proposed method, a 23 km
study area was selected in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. The AgbNDVI values were calculated from atmospheric corrected SPOT HRV data. To correctly detect high VI points, the influence factors on tree growth were identified using the AgbNDVI values, DEM and forest type data; the study area was then divided into 555 segments according to combinations of the influence factors: elevation, slope gradient, slope aspect and forest type. Thresholds for detecting high VI points were defined for each segment based on a histogram of AgbNDVI values. By superimposing the high VI points on topographic and geologic maps, most of the high VI points are clearly located on the concave/convex slopes and near the geologic boundaries prone to groundwater runoff. In addition, field investigations support the correctness of the high VI points, because the growth increments and biomass of trees (
) are greater than at points other than the high VI points, and they are located around known groundwater seeps and in a high water table area. Consequently, the proposed method can be expected to provide useful information for characterizing hydrogeological structures by combining with conventional photo-geological interpretation.

Aiming of development of facilities for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) that can be installed in hospitals, an accelerator-based BNCT facility is being developed at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center under a collaboration among the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the University of Tsukuba, and other institutions. It consists of a proton accelerator, having a maximum beam power of 80 kW, and a target, moderator, collimator and shield (TMCS) system. For the design concept, to satisfy the BNCT beam conditions and achieve a low activation, the radiation behavior in the TMCS system was simulated by the Monte Carlo method and this system configuration was optimized accordingly. In addition, the radiation estimation of the TMCS system was verified via several experiments and its applicability for BNCT was proved. This report reviews the estimation and validation studies for the development of the accelerator-based BNCT facility.

Upgrade of beam current in the Linac of Ibaraki Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (iBNCT) is one of the most important requirements to realize clinical trial. By 2018, the measurement of the produced neutrons characteristics and the neutron irradiation experiment for living cells have been done by producing 8-MeV proton beam current at the beryllium target with average current up to 2 mA. In order to satisfy the original clinical trial conditions, 5 mA average beam current is required at the target. For this goal, peak beam current extracted from the ion source should be increased to 60 mA from the present 30 mA with duty factor up to more than 10% (pulse width up to 1 ms and repetition rate up to more than 100 Hz). Stability of the peak current in the macro pulse is also important for the clinical application.

For operating a spallation neutron source and a muon target safely and efficiently, a general control system (GCS) operates within Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). GCS administers operation and interlock processes of many instruments under various operation status. Since the first beam injection in 2008, it has operated stably without any serious troubles for more than ten years. GCS has a data storage server storing operational data on status around target stations. It has functioned well to detect and investigate unusual situations by checking data in this server. For continuing stable operation of MLF in future, however, introduction of abnormality sign determination system (ASDS) will be necessary for picking up potential abnormalities of target stations caused by radiation damages, time-related deterioration and so on. It will judge abnormalities from slight state transitions of target stations based on analysis with various operational data throughout proton beams, target stations, and secondary beams during long-term operations. This report mentions present status of GCS, conceptual design of ASDS, and installation of an integral data storage server which can deal with various data for ASDS integrally.

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.

In defining the biological effects of the neutron capture reaction, we have proposed a deterministic parsing model (ISHIYAMA-IMAHORI model) to determine the Compound Biological Effectiveness (CBE) factor in Borono-Phenyl-Alanine (BPA)-mediated Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). To determine the CBE factor, we derived new calculation formula founded on the deterministic parsing model with three constants, CBE0, F, n and the eigen value Nth/Nmax. where, Nth and Nmax are the threshold value of boron concentration of N and saturation boron density. In order to determine Nth and Nmax in the formula, sigmoid logistic function was employed for
B concentration data, Db(t) obtained by dynamic PETtechnique, where, A, a and t0 are constants. From the application of sigmoid function to dynamic PET data, it is concluded that the Nth and Nmax for tissue and tumor are identified with the parameter constants in the sigmoid function in tion as: th b at 0 and max N = D t = N = x.

Since graphite-like B-C-N hybrid may have semiconducting property, this material is interesting for applications to electronic and luminescent devices. In order to synthesize this material, borazine ion plasma was implanted in graphite at room temperature (RT) and 600
C. An ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) chamber with base pressure
10
Pa was used for the experiment. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study suggested that B atoms in the deposited films are in a wide variety of atomic environment such as BC3, BN3 and B-C-N hybrid. The ratios of these coordinations strongly depend on the temperature during the ion implantation. It was found that the B-C-N hybrid is predominantly synthesized by the implantation at 600
C where the surface [B]/([B]+[C]+[N]) ratio ranges from 0.1 to 0.35. The results imply that it is possible to control the composition of B-C-N hybrid by changing the fluence of the ion plasma and the temperature of graphite during ion implantation.

A probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) procedure for Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel fabrication facilities is being developed applicable to nuclear facilities at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). As part of the PSA procedure, the approach to hazard analysis was established, which consists of two analysis steps: Functional Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (Functional FMEA) and Risk Matrix Analysis. In the Functional FMEA, a variety of functions of equipment composing the facility are analyzed to identify potential abnormal events exhaustively. In the second step, these potential events are screened to select abnormal events as candidate events to be analyzed for frequency and consequence by using two-dimensional matrix based on the rough estimation of likelihood and maximum unmitigated release of radioactive material. The applicability of the hazard analysis approach established was demonstrated through the trial application of the PSA procedure being developed to model plant of MOX fuel fabrication facility.

The aim of this study is to improve the accuracy of the BNCT dosimetry efficiently. We have developed the multi-voxel calculation method reconstructing the original voxel model by combining of several voxel cell sizes such as in 5mm, 10mm and 20mm voxel cell. To verify the accuracy of the multi-voxel method, the calculation results were compared with the phantom experimental data. These results proved that the multi-voxel calculation enables JCDS to more accurately estimate the absorbed doses to a patient by efficient calculations.

The electronic structure of this system is studied by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The thickness of the h-BN is estimated to be about two-layers from XPS. B K-edge NEXAFS spectra show new
* peak which is not observed in the spectrum for bulk h-BN. From a polarization dependence analysis of NEXAFS, we propose this new
* peak originates from the interaction between the h-BN and Ni(111). This new

In this research, we present nuclear power plant simulation method using Multilayer Perceptron, which is one of the models of Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs). The major characteristics of ANNs are to obtain the model through learning, analogy and very high speed processing. Furthermore, 'time synchronizing signal' and 'progress synchronizing signal' are added as the inputs to adapt the abnormal events with various scales or progress rates. This ANN, learned some sample data, can be flexibly adapted to simulate the abnormal events with different scales including explicit progress rates. In the verification using PWR simulator, we confirmed that this method could model NPP abnormal events by learning data and simulate the data which have different progress rates from learning data.
