$$alpha$$-nucleus potential for $$alpha$$-decay and sub-barrier fusion

The set of parameters for alpha-nucleus potential is derived by using the data for both the alpha-decay half-lives and the fusion cross-sections around barrier for reactions alpha+$$^{40}$$Ca, alpha+$$^{59}$$Co, alpha+$$^{208}$$Pb. The alpha-decay half-lives are obtained in the framework of cluster model by using the WKB approximation. The evaluated alpha-decay half-lives and the fusion cross-sections are well agreed with the data. Fusion reactions between alpha-particle and heavy nuclei can be used for both the formation of very heavy nuclei and the spectroscopic studies of the formed compound nuclei.

At the JAERI, we have constructed several high-resolution neutron diffractometers dedicated to biological macromolecules (called BIX-type diffractometers), which use a monochromatized neutron beam and a neutron imaging plate detector. In this paper, we review several interesting results regarding hydrogen positions and hydration in proteins, obtained using the two BIX-type diffractometers in JAERI. The general subject of neutron protein crystallography has been reviewed by several authors, and several selected topics have been discussed.
