A systematic study of the atom-level mixtures between Co and C$$_{60}$$ has made possible to find a new C$$_{60}$$-based compound phase, Co$$_{x}$$C$$_{60}$$ (x$$leq$$5). It is confirmed with the EXAFS analysis and the positron annihilation study that the polymeric structure is developed three-dimensionally by bridging two C$$_{60}$$ molecules with the covalently bonded Co atom.

The structural changes have been investigated in C$$_{60}$$ thin films irradiated with 7-MeV $$^{12}$$C$$^{2+}$$ ions using Raman spectroscopy. First, irradiated C$$_{60}$$ thin films show resistance to photopolymerization. The extent of the resistance increases with increasing fluence of ion irradiation. The effect is qualitatively explained by the fact that the photochemical reaction is suppressed by destructive collisions of the C$$_{60}$$ molecules with the energetic ions followed by lattice damage. Secondly, no intermediate fragments of a C$$_{60}$$ molecule generated by ion impact are observed, ${it i.e.}$, each C$$_{60}$$ molecule completely decomposes into its constituent atoms in a single catastrophic event upon energetic-ion impact. An effective cross section for decomposition of the C$$_{60}$$ molecule is derived from dependence of the peak-intensity ratio of ${it A}$$$_{g}$$(2) as $$sigma$$ = 5.1$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$.

The workshop on application of free-electron laser (FEL) and nuclear isomer study was held at Tokai Research Establishment of JAERI on September 28. The workshop was devoted to the discussions and the presentations of two thema as follows: Six papers associated with the laser compton gamma-ray, the photonuclear physics and the nuclear astrophysics using the gannma-ray produced by the T3 laser were presented in the morning session. Seven papers including an invited talk on the behavior of molecules in intense laser light fields and associated with the chemical decomposition of dioxin, the silicon isotope separetion, the infrared photoexcitation spectroscopy, the laser-tissue interaction and the single-wall carbon nanotube and nanohorn by FEL etc. were also presented in the afternoon session. The intensive discussion was exchanged among approximately 50 participants. Each performance during the first workshop was fully telecomunicated by a video conference system between Tokai and Kizu (Kansai Research Establishment) sites.

SPM investigation of C$$_{60}$$ thin films irradiated with energetic ions

Narumi, Kazumasa; Naramoto, Hiroshi

Proceedings of 3rd International Symposium on Atomic Level Characterizations for New Materials and Devices '01 (ALC '01), p.322 - 325, 2001/11

Transformation of C$$_{60}$$ thin films on Si(111) substrates by irradiation with 360 keV $$^{40}$$Ar$$^{+}$$ and $$^{40}$$Ar$$^{4+}$$ ions at fluences of 1.0$$times$$10$$^{12}$$/cm$$^{2}$$ to 1.1$$times$$10$$^{16}$$/cm$$^{2}$$ was investigated by atomic force microscopy. As-prepared insulating films become conductive after the irradiation up to the fluence of 1.1$$times$$10$$^{14}$$/cm$$^{2}$$, where the film is found to be almost transformed into a form of amorphous carbon by Raman-spectroscopy analysis. This results from conductive carbon species due to decomposition of the C$$_{60}$$ molecule. Considerable topographic change is observed up to the fluence of 1.1$$times$$10$$^{15}$$/cm$$^{2}$$ where the lines characteristic of the C$$_{60}$$ film fade out of the Raman spectra, which is due to sputtering and to densification of the C$$_{60}$$ molecule.
