A new deterministic transport code based on the method of characteristics (MOC) has been developed for heterogeneous transport calculations in core design of innovative reactors which have complex structures. We have investigated the capability of the MOC code for general geometry with an unstructured geometry PWR problem. The comparison of the results with accurate Monte Carlo calculation results by GMVP has confirmed that the MOC code produces satisfactory results and has a capability to treat unstructured geometry.

The code is fundamentally based on the PRESTA-CG, which is improved on the electron transport in the EGS4 and specialized for the utilization of a combinatorial geometry (CG) method. The main additional functions in the present user code are classified into two parts of the definition of radiation sources and the transport of photons. The developed user code was applied to two types of detection systems in order to demonstrate its availability. As the result, it was found that the present code allows the detailed response analysis of complicated detection systems for several sources with just a simple handling.

An EGS4 user code has been developed to design gamma ray detection systems for complex shapes of radioactive sources. The code is fundamentally based on the PRESTA-CG, which is improved on the electron transport in the EGS4 and specialized for using a combinatorial geometry (CG) method. The newly added functions are classified mainly into two parts of the transport of particles and the definition of sources. This user code was applied to some detectors used for low-level radioactive wastes monitoring in order to demonstrate the availability of this code. As the result, it was found that the response of anti-Compton spectrometer and the radiation background in a concrete building could be suitably estimated.

SCINFUL has been used to calculate response functions of organic scintillators for high-energy neutron spectroscopy. However, the applicability of SCINFUL is limited to the calculations for cylindrical NE213 and NE110 scintillators. In the present study, SCINFUL-CG was developed by introducing a geometry specifying function and high-energy neutron cross-section data into SCINFUL. The geometry package MARS-CG, the extended version of the CG (Combinatorial Geometry), was programmed into SCINFUL-CG to express various geometries of detectors. Neutron spectra in the regions specified by the CG can be evaluated by the track length estimator. The cross section data of silicon, oxygen and aluminum for neutron transport calculation were incorporated up to 100MeV using the data of LA150. Validity of SCINFUL-CG was examined by comparing calculated results with those by SCINFUL and MCNP and experimental data. SCINFUL-CG can be used for the designs of high-energy neutron spectrometers and neutron monitors using the organic scintillators. The present report is a user's manual of SCINFUL-CG.
