Results of research in 1997 to General Atomics ( GA ) and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory ( PPPL ) are reported. The author visited the computer system of fusion group in GA. He joined the tokamak experiment in DIII-D, especially on the demonstration of the remote experiment inside U.S., and investigated the data processing system of DIII-D and the computer network, etc. After the visit to GA, He visited PPPL and exchanged the information about the equipment of remote experiment between JAERI and PPPL based on the US-Japan fusion energy research cooperation. He also investigated the data processing system of TFTR tokamak, the computer network and so on. Results of research of the second visit to GA in 2000 are also reported, which describes a rapid progress of each data processing equipment by the advance on the computer technology in just three years.

It includes a model of pellet ablation, parallel flow model for the attached ablation channel and a simplified magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pellet displacement model. This treatment reveals satisfactory agreement with the present day experiments on ASDEX-U and DIII-D tokamaks. The model provides the optimisation directions for deep plasma fuelling in experiments. Calculation with ITER parameters suggests that deep penetration up to ~ 60-70% of minor radius is possible at modest velocity <0.5 km/s with high field side injection.

This is a review article on divertor research: present status and issues. In light of importance of divertor research, divertor diagnositics have been significantly developed, and their data have been compared with transport code calculations and divertor database has been accumulated, which has enabled quantitative discussion on thermal and particle transport, radiative cooling and impurity source. However, inter-machine database has not been archived yet. Inter-machine comparison would improve the estimation of divertor characteristics in future devices.
