In the project, the high-energy proton accelerator complex of the world highest intensity is under construction. In order to establish a reasonable shielding design, both simplified and detailed design methods were used in the shielding design of J-PARC. This paper reviews the present status of the radiation safety design study for J-PARC.

Energy consumption in the industry sector, which is larger than that of the residential/commercial or transportation sector, occupies nearly 50% of final energy consumption in Japan. The industry sector has made an effort for energy conservation from an economical point of view. Now further effort is required also to cope with a global warning problem. This report summarizes the results of investigation on energy consumption, changes in energy intensity and development of energy conservation technologies including those common to the industries and recycling of wastes, focusing on energy intensive industries such as iron & steel and chemicals. Advanced energy conservation technologies or systems are being developed with a large and continuous effort in all industris, and recycling of wastes, e.g. waste plastics, has started in industry scale.

Description is given for the characteristic radiation environment for the High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility and the design concept of the radiation control system of it. The facility is a large scale accelerator complex consisting of high energy proton accelerators carrying the highest beam intensity in the world and the related experimental facilities and therefore provides various issues relevant to the radiation environment. The present report describes the specifications for the radiation control system for the facility, determined in consideration of these characteristics.

The result indicated that the best neutronic performance could be obtained for a decoupled H
moderator in a Pb reflector by optimizing the premoderator and adopting an appropriate decoupling energy, even compared with optimized one in a Be reflector.

An optimization study on the premoderator, the reflector material choice and a length of the liner is carried out for the design of high performance decoupled hydrogen moderator. NMTC/JAM and MCNP-4C are used for the neutronics calculation. The result indicates that, assuming premoderator dimensions and decoupling energy is controlled, the decoupled hydrogen moderator with a premoderator can provide better pulse characteristics than that without the premoderator for a Be reflector. On the selection of the reflector material, it is clearly shown that Pb and Hg reflectors give merits in using the premoderator for higher intensity and reduction of energy deposition in moderator. It is also shown that a H2O premoderator provides a short tail while a D2O premoderator provides the high peak intensity. Minimum liner length is evaluated to be 20 cm from the viewpoint of neutronics.
