On the basis of experimental results, growth of the eutectic material is modeled by the parabolic rate law. Heat and mass transfer processes are also modeled considering both the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase changes of eutectic material. Thermophysical properties of eutectic material obtained from the experimental measurements are also included in the analytic thermophysical property model and analytic equation-of-state model.

This paper describes basic visualization experiments on eutectic reaction and relocation of boron carbide (BC) and stainless steel (SS) under a high temperature condition exceeding 1500C as well as the importance of such behaviors in molten core during a core disruptive accident in a Generation-IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (750 MWe class) designed in Japan. At first, a reactivity history was calculated using an exact perturbation calculation tool taking into account expected behaviors. This calculation indicated the importance of a relocation behavior of the BC-SS eutectic because its behavior has a large uncertainty in the reactivity history. To clarify this behavior, basic experiments were carried out by visualizing the reaction of a BC pellet contacted with molten SS in a high temperature-heating furnace. The experiments have shown the eutectic reaction visualization as well as freezing and relocation of the BC-SS eutectic in upper part of the solidified test piece due to the density separation.

BC used mainly for BWR and EPR absorbers could cause phenomena which never happen in PWR with Ag-In-Cd absorbers during severe accident. BC would make a eutectic interaction with stainless steel and enhance melt relocation. Boron oxidation could increase H generation and change of liberated carbon to CH could enhance CHI generation. HBO generated during BC oxidation could be changed to CsBO by combining with Cs. This may increase Cs deposition in reactor coolant system. There could be differences in configuration, surface area, stainless steel-BC weight ratio between BC powder and pellet absorbers. Present issue is to clarify effect of these differences on full scale melt progression, BC oxidation and source term. Advancement of this research domain could contribute to further sophistication of prediction tool for melt progression and source terms, and treatment of organic iodide formation in safety evaluation.

It was found that the diffusion of Np in the salt phase was a rate-determining step in the cathodic reaction when the concentration of NpCl was less than about 1 wt.% and the liquid Cd or Bi phase was not saturated with Np. The redox potentials of the Np/Np couple at liquid Cd electrode at 723, 773 and 823 K were observed more positively than those at Mo electrode by 0.158, 0.140 and 0.126 V, respectively. The potential shift would result from a lowering of activity of Np in Cd phase according to the alloy formation of NpCd at 723 K and NpCd at 773 and 823 K. The redox potentials of the Np/Np couple at liquid Bi electrode at 723, 773 and 823 K were more positive than those at Mo electrode by 0.427, 0.419 and 0.410 V, respectively, which would be attributable to a lowering of activity of Np in Bi phase according to the formation of NpBi.
