Development and operation of the JAERI superconducting energy recovery linacs

Minehara, Eisuke

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, 557(1), p.16 - 22, 2006/02

 Times Cited Count:11 Percentile:58.08(Instruments & Instrumentation)

The JAERI FEL facility at Tokai, Ibaraki, Japan has been well known one of the two existing and operating superconducting energy recovery linacs together with one more of JLAB (Jefferson national accelerator facility) FEL facility at Newport News, Virginia, U.S.A. We have independently and successfully developed one of the most advanced and newest accelerator technologies named "superconducting energy recovery linacs (ERLs)" and the application technologies using ERLs in future. We plan to report the current high power FEL upgrade program research, stress corrosion cracking prevention technology research, large current and high brightness photoelectron gun research of negative-electron affinity (NEA) photocathode and NEA electron-excitation cathode as the most important elemental technology in realizing many powerful ERLs.

Accumulation of defects during energetic ion irradiation below $$sim$$10K in platinum thin films is studied by electrical resistivity measurements. Experimental results are analyzed by using a model which describes the production and selective radiation annealing of defects. For high-energy ($$sim$$100MeV) heavy ion irradiations, radiation annealing process due to electronic excitation is found mainly at the initial stage of irradiation. From the defect accumulation curve and defect recovery spectra, the effective temperature corresponding to the lattice agitation induced by electronic excitation is estimated.

Vortex dissipation and level dynamics for the layered superconductors with impurities

Fujita, Ayumi

Physical Review B, 64(6), p.064504_1 - 064504_6, 2001/08

We study parametric level statistics of the discretized excitation spectra inside a moving vortex core in layered superconductors with impurities. The universal conductivity is evaluated numerically for the various values of rescaled vortex velocities $$kappa$$ from the clean case to the dirty limit case. The random matrix theoretical prediction is verified numerically in the large $$kappa$$ regime. On the contrary in the low velocity regime, we observe $$sigma_{xx} propto kappa^{2/3}$$which is consistent with the theoretical result for the super-clean case, where the energy dissipation is due to the Landau-Zener transition which takes place at the points called ``avoided crossing''.
