Criticality configuration design methodology applied to the design of fuel debris experiment in the new STACY

The new critical assembly STACY will be able to contribute to the validation of criticality calculations related to the fuel debris. The experimental core designs are in progress in the frame of JAEA/IRSN collaboration. This paper presents the method applied to optimize the design of the new STACY core to measure the criticality characteristics of pseudo fuel debris that simulated Molten Core Concrete Interaction (MCCI) of the fuel debris. To ensure that a core configuration is relevant for code validation, it is important to evaluate the reactivity worth of the main isotopes of interest and their k$$_{rm eff}$$ sensitivity to their cross sections. In the case of the fuel debris described in this study, especially for the concrete composition, silicon is the nucleus with the highest k$$_{rm eff}$$ sensitivity to the cross section. For this purpose, some parameters of the core configuration, as for example the lattice pitches or the core dimensions, were adjusted using optimization algorithm to find efficiently the optimal core configurations to obtain high sensitivity of silicon capture cross section. Based on these results, realistic series of experiments for fuel debris in the new STACY could be defined to obtain an interesting feedback for the MCCI. This methodology is useful to design other experimental conditions of the new STACY.

Voltage drop analysis and leakage suppression design for mineral-insulated cables

The influence of materials of mineral-insulated (MI) cables on their electrical characteristics upon exposure to high-temperature conditions was examined via a transmission test, in the objective of achieving the stability of the potential distribution along the cable length. Occurrence of a voltage drop along the cable was confirmed for aluminum oxide (Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$) and magnesium oxide (MgO), as insulating materials of the MI cable. A finite-element method (FEM)-based analysis was performed to evaluate the leakage in the potentials, which was found at the terminal end. Voltage drop yields by the transmission test and the analysis were in good agreement for the MI cable of Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ and MgO materials, which suggests the reproducibility of the magnitude relationship of the experimental results via the FEM analysis. To suppress the voltage drop, the same FEM analysis was conducted, the diameter of the core wires ($$d$$) and the distance between them ($$l$$) were varied. Considering the variation of $$d$$, the potential distribution in the MI cable produced a minimum voltage drop corresponding to a ratio $$d/D$$ of 0.35, obtained by dividing $$d$$ with that of the insulating material ($$D$$). In case of varying $$l$$, a minimum voltage drop was l/$$D$$ of 0.5.

Numerical analysis of interfacial growth and deformation in horizontal stratified two-phase flow by lattice Boltzmann method

This report is the JAERI's report version of the doctor thesis by the author. In this report, first, the validity and usefulness of the application of the two-phase fluid model of the lattice-gas method and the lattice Boltzmann method(LBM) are examined. On the basis of the examination, next, the horizontal stratified two-phase flow that is the fundamental and important flow is simulated by the HCZ model which is one of the two-phase fluid model of the LBM. It is seen that the interfacial growth of the HCZ model satisfies the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory and reproduces the theoretical two-phase flow regime map of Taitel and Dukler(T-D map). It is found that more superficial flow velocity of the rare phase is necessary in the channel with the narrow width. The HCZ model can also simulate the droplet generation accompanying more complex interfacial phenomena and reproduce the experimental correlation of Ishii and Grolmes in the range of the distribution of the experimental data.

The photo neutralization method with Nd:YAG laser for negative hydrogen ions has been expected as an available candidate for the transverse beam profile measurement. The fraction of photo detached electron can also be used for charge exchange procedure to extract very low power proton beam for Transmutation Experimental Facility in J-PARC. The laser system has advantages of maintenance and radiation hardness in high intensity proton accelerators. In order to establish the low power beam extraction system and beam profile monitor, the photo neutralization efficiency must be surveyed in practical beam line with high intensity H$$^{-}$$ beam. In this paper, an experimental set-up and preliminary results of photo neutralization method for intense H$$^{-}$$ beam in J-PARC MEBT1 are described.

Study on interfacial growth and deformation of horizontal stratified two-phase flow by lattice Boltzmann method

In this thesis, first the liquid-gas models of the lattice method are examined by applying them to two-phase flow simulations. Next the liquid-gas model(the HCZ model) of the lattice Boltzmann method is applied to the three-dimensional simulation of the horizontal stratified two-phase flow. The following results are obtained. (1)The two- and three- dimensional interface simulated by the HCZ model satisfies the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory. (2)In the simulation of the interfacial growth in the rectangular channel, it is found that the relation between the interfacial growth and the flow state is in agreement with the flow regime map proposed theoretically by Taitel and Dukler. (3)It is also found that the three dimensionality becomes remarkable and the interfacial growth needs more flow rate of the rare phase than that of the theoretical flow regime map when the channel width is narrower. (4)In the droplet creation simulation, it is found that the relation between the droplet creation and the flow state simulates the experimental correlation proposed by Ishii and Grolmes.

The Lattice Boltzmann simulation of the droplet creation in the horizontal stratified two-phase flow

The lattice Boltzmann method for one-component two-phase fluid is applied to the simulation of the droplet creation in the horizontal stratified two-phase flow. It is observed in several flow states that the droplet tears from the interface wave. The dimensionless numbers that characterize the flow state are also measured during the simulations. After checking the influence of the lattice length and width to the simulation result, the relation between the droplet creation and the measured dimensionless numbers is compared with the inception criteria of the droplet creation that was proposed on the basis of experimental data by Ishii and Grolmes. It was found that the simulation results are included in the devitation of experimental data from the correlation of Ishii-Grolmes.

A modified quasi-steady-state method has been developed to evaluate the mean power during a nuclear excursion in fissile solution. The original method used the critical equation based on the one-group theory to calculate the reactivity. However, the one-group approximation reduces the calculation accuracy and the geometrical buckling used in the critical equation is not applicable to complex geometries. Then, we have modified the method to use the feedback coefficients of reactivity. Although the modified method requires an external calculation to obtain the feedback coefficients, it is applicable to complex geometries and gives more accurate results than the one-group approximation. Moreover, a new method to calculate the boiling power has been developed. using the experimental data of a supercritical experiment facility, SILENE. Experimental analyses were conducted to validate the new method for supercritical xperiments using CRAC and TRACY. The results showed good agreements with the experiments.
