Measurement of void fraction distribution at high pressure in 4 $$times$$ 4 simulated fuel bundle for validation of thermal-hydraulics simulation codes

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is developing a neutronics/thermal-hydraulics coupling simulation code for light-water reactors. Thermal-hydraulic simulation codes applied to the coupling code are expected to calculate the void fraction distribution in a rod bundle under operational conditions, which are necessary for neutron transport simulation, and need to be validated using void fraction distribution data in a rod bundle under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. Therefore, we have conducted the measurement of the instantaneous void distribution in the 4 $$times$$ 4 simulated fuel bundle using a developed wire mesh sensor, which is installed in the pressurized two-phase flow experimental loop of JAEA to obtain the data for code validation.

Parametric survey on possible impact of partitioning and transmutation of high-level radioactive waste

The benefit of implementing Partitioning and Transmutation (P&T) of high-level wastes was parametrically surveyed. The possible reduction of the geological repository area was estimated. By recycling minor actinides (MA), the repository area required for unit spent fuel was reduced significantly in the case of MOX-LWR. This effect was caused by removal of $$^{241}$$Am which is a long-term heat source. By partitioning the fission products, in addition to MA recycling, further 70-80% reduction from the MA-recovery case can be expected for both UO$$_2$$ and MOX. This significant reduction was independent of the cooling time before the partitioning process.

Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC)

Irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) is a potential failure mode suffered by the core-components of austenitic stainless steels in the aged light-water reactor (LWR), which is the intergranular type cracking caused by synergistic effects of neutron/gamma radiation and chemical environment. Effects of radiation on the materials and high-temperature water are discussed in this paper to understand IASCC phenomenon from a mechanistic viewpoint. It is essential to elucidate the radiation-induced microcompositional and microstructural changes in the alloy for mechanistic and predictive investigations of IASCC. Although grain boundary segregations of alloying and impurity elements are significant factors affecting IASCC, it has been considered that the radiation-induced microstructural and mechanical changes of materials play critical roles in IASCC. For mechanistic understanding of IASCC, further fundamental research works with experimental and theoretical approaches are needed. Efforts directed to the researches at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute are also described.

Code development for advanced non-LWRs based on the system based code concept

This paper presents a future vision for safety and structural code development for advanced non-light water reactors. The most important feature that these codes and standards should have is that they ensure that safety goals are met in the way most appropriate and practical to the characters of new reactors which could be significantly different from those of light water ones. For this purpose, the author proposes a universal structure which consists of goals, codes and standards and knowledge base. The goals will be defined in terms of safety, reliability and economy. Codes and standards will form a seamless structure which provides multiple pathways with intermediary targets that correlate the goals and candidate technical options for structure and component design. Margins will be allocated in a plant lifecycle utilizing the System Based Code Concept. Knowledge bases will support codes and standards and allows for timely technical updates. As a future vision, a concept of digitalized autonomous code in which autonomous technical updates of provisions are realized is presented.
