The rate-determining step was the reaction of Eu(III) with the two extractant molecules. The obtained mechanism and rate constants agreed with those of the single-ion distribution system, in which Eu(III) was distributed to the particles in the Eu(III) solution.

Nb and peak tailing from abundant isotopes of Zr and Mo in concrete matrices. The removal of interferences was verified by measurement of radio-contamination-free concretes used as a sample matrix blank. Method detection limits of 1.7 mBq g
and 0.2 Bq g
were achieved for
Zr and
Mo, respectively, in the concrete matrices. The interference removal factor for Nb (equivalent to the decontamination factor in radiochemical separation) was of the order of 10
, and the abundance sensitivity was of the order of 10
, indicating that the developed method is reliable for verifying the presence of ultralow concentrations of
Zr and
Mo. The present method is suitable for the rapid assessment of
Zr and
Mo for radioactivity inventory of concrete rubble.

A plasma produced by a XeCl laser ablation of boron compound was investigated using ion probes and a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Although the ablated neutral boron atoms had a natural abundance ratio, the isotope ratio of singly ionized boron atoms having a greatly different from the natural abundance ratio was observed. The observed isotope ratio of boron ions was different from the natural abundance.

In nuclear waste materials there are various radionuclides to which standard analytical techniques are difficult to be applied. We are developing an analytical technique where such nuclides are analyzed using multi-step resonance ionization mass spectrometry. In this study, we have developed an external cavity diode laser applicable to the analysis. The wavelength and output power dependence on injection current and temperature were investigated for various types of laser diodes. Based on the data, we have obtained a suitable condition to operate the ECDL in stable single-mode oscillation, so that a continuous scanning range of about 100 GHz was realized. Additionaly, to evaluate the bandwidth of the developed ECDL, we have performed Doppler-free spectroscopy. The reasonable agreement of the measured isotope shift and HFS splitting with the reported values demonstrated that the developed ECDL is applicable to a precise laser spectroscopy as well as a laser trace analysis.

The SiO desorb remarkably at surface temperature of 1000 K. The desorption yield increased with increasing the incident energy of O. On the other hand, the desorption yield increased with decreasing the incident energy in the temperature region lower than 1000 K. Oxygen uptake curves observed by O-1s photoemission measurements corresponded to the SiO desorption features. These facts reveal that the passive oxidation coexists with the SiO desorption in the temperature region from 900 K to 1000 K.

We report an application of automated devices for multi-step chemical separation for nickel and an idea of subsequent quantification for Ni-59 using ICP-QQQ-MS. Nickel is separated on our selected automated instruments applying a conventional separation scheme. The obtained chemical recovery for Ni standard carrier was 89.8% (relative standard deviation, RSD of 2.9%, n = 3), which is consistent with the manually obtained recovery of 87.0% (RSD = 2.2%, n = 3). The quantification of Ni-59 by ICP-QQQ-MS was examined. Accordingly, the intensity of 59Ni could be deduced from an intensity correction curve for natural isotopes of nickel. The proposed analytical method is more rapid and less laborious, being expected to reduce radiation exposure to workers.
