Sorption behavior of radionuclides (RNs) in buffer materials (bentonites), rocks and cementitious materials is one of the key processes in a safe geological disposal of radioactive waste because RNs migration in these materials is expected to be retarded by the sorption process. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the sorption process and develop a database compiling reliable data and mechanistic/predictive models so that reliable parameters can be set under a variety of geochemical conditions relevant to a performance assessment (PA). For this purpose, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has developed the database of sorption parameters in bentonites, rocks and cementitious materials. This sorption database (SDB) was firstly developed as an important basis for the H12 PA of a high-level radioactive waste disposal, and have been provided through the Web. JAEA has continued to improve and update the SDB in the view of potential future needs of data focusing on assuring the desired quality level and testing the usefulness of the databases for possible applications to the PA-related parameter setting. This report focuses on updating of the sorption database (JAEA-SDB) as a basis of integrated approach for the PA-related distribution coefficient (Kd) setting and development of mechanistic sorption models. This report also includes an overview of the database structure and contents. Kd data and their quality assurance (QA) results were updated from literature collected with wider ranges. As a result, 8,503 Kd data from 70 references related to the above-mentioned systems were added and the total number of Kd values in JAEA-SDB reached 79,072. The QA/classified Kd data reached about 75.4% for all Kd data in JAEA-SDB. The updated JAEA-SDB is expected to make it possible to give a basis for the next-step PA-related Kd setting.

data and their quality assurance (QA) results were updated by focusing on the following systems as potential needs extracted from our recent activities on the K
setting and development of mechanistic models, i.e., clay minerals, sedimentary rocks and cementitious materials. As a result, 6,702 K
data from 60 references were added and the total number of K
values in JAEA-SDB reached 69,679. The QA/classified K
data reached about 72% for all K
data in JAEA-SDB.

The distributed material database system named "Data-Free-Way" has been developed by four organizations (the National Institute for Materials Science, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute, and the Japan Science and Technology Corporation) under a cooperative agreement. In order to create additional values of the system, knowledge base system, in which knowledge extracted from the material database is expressed, is planned to be developed for more effective utilization of Data-Free-Way. XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has been adopted as the description method of the retrieved results and the meaning of them. One knowledge note described with XML is stored as one knowledge which composes the knowledge base. This paper describes the current status of Data-Free-Way, the description method of knowledge extracted from the material database with XML and the distributed material knowledge base system.

The Department has carried out researches and developments (R&Ds) of innovative nuclear energy system and their related fundamental technologies to ensure the long-term energy supply in Japan. The report deals with the R&Ds of an innovative water reactor, called Reduced-Moderation Water Reactor (RMWR), which has the capability of multiple recycling and breeding of plutonium using light water reactor technologies. In addition, as basic studies and fundamental researches of nuclear energy system in general, described are intensive researches in the fields of reactor physics, thermal-hydraulics, nuclear data, nuclear fuels, and materials. These activities are essential not only for the R&Ds of innovative nuclear energy systems but also for the improvement of safety and reliability of current nuclear energy systems. The maintenance and operation of reactor engineering facilities belonging to the Department support experimental activities.

This report summarizes the research and development activities in the Department of Nuclear Energy System during the fiscal year of 2001 (April 1, 2001 - March 31, 2002). The Department has been organized from April 1998. The main research activity is aimed to build the basis of the development of future nuclear energy systems. The research activities of the Department cover basic nuclear data evaluation, conceptual design of a reduced-moderation water reactor, reactor physics experiments and development of the reactor analysis codes, experiment and analysis of thermal-hydrodynamics, energy system analysis and assessment, development of advanced materials for a reactor, lifetime reliability assessment on structural material, development of advanced nuclear fuel, design of a marine reactor and the research for a nuclear ship system. The maintenance and operation of reactor engineering facilities belonging to the Department are undertaken. The activities of the research committees to which the Department takes a role of secretariat are also summarized in this report.

A neural network model within a Bayesian framework was adopted based on the material database constructed by JAERI for prediction of creep rupture properties of irradiated type 304 stainless steel. Stress level was modeled as a function of 18 variables, including rupture life, creep test temperature, chemical compositions; 10 elements, heat treatment temperature, heat treatment duration, neutron irradiation temperature, fast neutron fluence, thermal neutron fluence, irradiation time, based on JAERI material database in which 347 creep rupture data sets of type 304 stainless steels were stored. The Bayesian method puts error bars on the predicted values of the rupture strength and allows the significance of each individual factor to be estimated.

The JAERI Material Performance Database (JMPD) was developed with a view to utilizing material performance data efficiently. Data from more than 11,500 test pieces are prepared for data evaluation in the JMPD. Some kinds of data analyses have been performed by utilizing the JMPD. As for improvement of user interfaces, graphic function and modification function of the data were added in the JMPD. The following important points will be emphasized in the future direction of the JMPD; (1) enrichment of the stored data in both of the core and the surrounding portions of the JMPD, (2) improvement of user-friendliness, (3) construction and enrichment of data networking system, and (4) construction of knowledge base.

The distributed material database system named "Data-Free-Way" has been developed by four organizations (the National Institute for Materials Science, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute and Japan Science and Technology Corporation) under a cooperative agreement. It is a system which can display the data which the user demands without considering the organization which stores data as a table and a graph. The knowledge of the forte of each organization based on the retrieval result from the fact database is made aiming at more highly developed use of this system. The development of the system by which the user can refer to the knowledge is advanced. Though the retrieval result from the fact database was displayed as a table and a graph, that is, the finding note where they were described and expressed with XML as knowledge.
