The JAEA Safety Research Center has been conducting fundamental research on advanced inspection and structural integrity assessment technologies since FY2024, including the development of a machine-learning-based ultrasonic flaw detection method using an ultrasonic simulator. To assess the simulator's applicability, phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) results produced by the simulator were compared with actual measurement data. Due to limited publicly available datasets, an intergranular crack in the pressurizer spray line piping of Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc.'s Ohi Nuclear Power Station Unit 3 was selected as the reference case. PAUT linear scanning analysis at a 45
incident angle detected the crack's corner and edge echoes. Strong columnar-crystal propagation echoes were also observed within the weld metal, with their intensity showing dependence on the symmetric axis angle. Analysis at a 31
incident angle similarly identified strong columnar-crystal propagation echoes, which connected to the crack's corner echoes and propagated into the weld region. These results align with actual measurements, indicating that the observed weld-metal echoes are likely attributable to columnar-crystal propagation.

Extraction chromatgraphy technology for trivalent minor actinide (MA(III) ; Am(III) and Cm(III)) recovery from the solution generated by an extraction process in reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel has been developed. A fine particle is generated in the solution. The fine particle must be removed before MA recovery operation, because that leads clogging of the extraction chlomatography column. In order to prevent clogging the column, filtration system utilizing porous silica beads packed column has been designed. In this study, a fine particle trapping system was developed and particle removal performance of the system was experimentally evaluated using alumina particles as simulated fine particle. Column experiments revealed that the fine particle with the particle size from 0.12 to 15
m is cause of clogging of the filtration column. Since simulated fine particles were trapped on filtration experiments, a filtration system using the porous silica beads column is practical,

High-energy-resolution fluorescence detection-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) spectroscopy has enabled us to discuss the electronic structure of actinide compounds in more detail than with conventional XANES spectroscopy. We are conducting research with the aim of contributing to the prediction of the migration behavior of trace actinide elements in the environment by performing actinide speciation in various environmental samples. In this paper, we introduce the content of the discussion of the electronic state of U from the perspective of basic science, which is important for advancing application of HERFD-XANES spectroscopy to environmental science.

Various radioactive elements such as Uranium (U), and Radium (Ra) are still present in the mine ground water with very small amount, and behavior of those elements is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the composition of metal oxides and clay minerals in a soil of slag deposit at the mine, and systematics of adsorption structure of various ions were examined. Identifying the composition and chemical forms of minerals present in the soil of slag can provide useful information for the safety assessment and evaluation of influence on the surrounding environment.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.00(Instruments & Instrumentation)In this study, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectral analysis and column experiments were used to verify the selectivity of rare earth (RE) ions by alkyl diamide amine (ADAAM) adsorbent. In addition, the interactions between the N atoms of ADAAM and RE ions were evaluated to determine whether any of the RE ions are a valid simulant for developing a mutual separation process for minor actinides (MAs) in highly radioactive liquid waste. It was confirmed that La and Ce interacted with the amine N atom of ADAAM and they showed a peak shift of the N-K edge XANES spectrum; this finding suggested that a soft interaction is an essential factor influencing ion selectivity. Therefore, the selection factor of RE ions by ADAAM adsorbent was similar to that of MAs. It was concluded that RE ions are reasonable species to simulate MAs.

Such distinctive electronic states are of major interest to researchers and engineers working in various fields, from fundamental physics to the nuclear industry and environmental sciences for actinide elements.

We found that the spins in bcc CoMn are coupled parallel to those in perpendicularly magnetized MnGa layer under the as-grown conditions, while the post annealing modulates the interfacial magnetic coupling to antiferromagnetic in Co. The elementspecific hysteresis curves at each absorption edge revealed the large coercive fields in Mn and Co through the exchange coupling with MnGa. After the annealing process, the changes of XMCD spectral line shapes are related to the interfacial reactions promoting the formation of Mn and Co
MnGa layers, which is deduced from the analysis oftransmission electron microscopy. The interfacial diffusion of Mn atoms modulates the magnetic exchange coupling between Mn and Co sites and reverses the direction of perpendicular magnetization.

Np among radioactive nuclides and aimed to measure the thermal-neutron capture cross-section for
Np in a well-thermalized neutron field by an activation method. A
Np standard solution was used for irradiation samples. A thermal-neutron flux at an irradiation position was measured with neutron flux monitors:
Sc,
Co,
Mo,
Ta and
Au. The
Np sample and flux monitors were irradiated together for 30 minutes in the graphite thermal column equipped with the Kyoto University Research Reactor. The similar irradiation was carried out twice. After the irradiations, the
Np samples were quantified using 312-keV gamma ray emitted from
Pa in a radiation equilibrium with
Np. The reaction rates of
Np were obtained from gamma-ray peak net counts given by
Np, and then the thermal-neutron capture cross-section of
Np was found to be 173.8
4.4 barn by averaging the results obtained by the two irradiations. The present result was in agreement with the reported data given by a time-of-flight method within the limit of uncertainty.
