Bias effects on g- and s-factors in Westcott convention

Harada, Hideo

For accuracy improvement of neutron activation analysis and neutron capture cross section, bias effects are investigated on g- and s-factors in the Westcott convention. As origins of biases, a joining function shape, neutron temperature and sample temperature, have been investigated. Biases are quantitatively deduced for two 1/v isotopes ($$^{197}$$Au, $$^{59}$$Co) and six non-1/v isotopes ($$^{241}$$Am, $$^{151}$$Eu, $$^{103}$$Rh, $$^{115}$$In, $$^{177}$$Hf, $$^{226}$$Ra). The s-factor calculated with a joining function deduced recently by a detailed Monte Carlo simulation is compared to s-factors calculated with traditional joining functions by Westcott. The results show the bias induced by sample temperature is small as the order of 0.1% for g-factor and the order of 1% for s-factor. On the other hand, biases induced by a joining function shape for s-factor depend significantly on both isotopes and neutron temperature. As the result, reaction rates are also affected significantly as well. The bias size on reaction rate is given in the case of epithermal neutron index r = 0.1, for the eight isotopes.

Corrections to the $$^{148}$$Nd method of evaluation of burnup for the PIE samples from Mihama-3 and Genkai-1 reactors

Suyama, Kenya; Mochizuki, Hiroki*

The value of the burnup is one of the most important parameters of samples taken by post irradiation examination (PIE). In this study, concerning the PIE data from Mihama-3 and Genkai-1 PWRs, which were taken at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, the burnup values of the PIE samples were re-evaluated and the PIE data are re-analyzed using SWAT and SWAT2 code systems with JENDL-3.3 library. This analysis concludes that the burnup values of samples from Mihama-3 and Genkai-1 PWRs should be corrected of 2-3%. The effect of re-evaluation of the burnup value on the neutron multiplication factor is approximately 1% for PIE samples having the burnup of larger than 30 GWd/t. Comparison between calculation results using a single pin cell model and an assembly model is carried out. Because the both results agreed within a few percents, we concluded that the single pin cell model is suitable for the analysis of PIE samples and the underestimation of plutonium isotopes does not result from the geometry model.

From present study, the irradiation effect by using combination of Boron and Gd, showed various irradiation effects (additive effect, less than additive effect, non additive effect), which depend on Gd concentration. The additive effect will be occurred when using a combination of Gd and Boron with low concentration, however, adding Gd to high concentration will reduce additive effect resulting in less than additive to finally non-additive effect. This result indicate that achieving suitable concentrations of Gd and Boron together in tumors may increase the therapy effect, but achieving excess concentration of Gd with Boron together in tumor may cause negative therapeuitic effect.
