In a fusion reactor plant, a neutral beam injector (NBI) will be operated for a long time, and it will allow neutron streaming from NBI ports to outside of the plasma vacuum vessel. It requires the superconducting magnet to develop nuclear technology to produce stable magnetic field and to reduce activation of the magnet components. In this report, the back ground of the necessity and the contents of the nuclear technology of the superconducting magnets for fusion application are discussed and some typical investigation results are presented, which are the neutron irradiation effect on Nb$$_{3}$$Sn wire, the development of low activation superconducting wire, and the design concept to reduce nuclear heating and nuclear transformation by streaming. In addition, recent activities in high energy particle physics are introduced and potential ripple effect of the technology of the superconducting magnets is described briefly.

This paper describes the results of core physics test in start-up and power-up of the HTTR. The tests were conducted in order to ensure performance and safety of the high temperature gas cooled reactor, and was carried out to measure the critical approach, the excess reactivity, the shutdown margin, the control rod worth, the reactivity coefficient, the neutron flux distribution and the power distribution. The expected core performance and the required reactor safety characteristics were verified from the results of measurements and calculations.

In view of the future plan of Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University, the present study consisted of (1) the transmission experiments of high energy neutrons through materials, (2) experimental simulation of ADSR using the Kyoto University Critical Assembly(KUCA), and (3) conceptual neutronics design study on KUR type ADSR using the MCNP-X code. Through the present study, valuable knowledge on the basic nuclear characteristics of ADSR, which is indispensable to promote the study on ADSR, was obtained both theoretically and experimentally. For the realization of ADSR, it is considered to be necessary to accumulate results of research steadily. For this purpose, it is inevitable (1) to compile the more precise nuclear data for the wide energy range, (2) to establish experimental techniques for reactor physics study on ADSR including subcriticality measurement and absolute neutron flux measurement, and (3) to develop neutronics calculation tools which take into account the neutron generation process by the spallation reaction and the delayed neutron behavior.

Simple estimation method of $$gamma$$-ray dose using low neutron-sensitive TLD (UD-170LS) for Intra-Operative Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (IOBNCT)

In order to estimate the maximum gamma-ray dose in the brain in Intra-Operative Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (IOBNCT), this study was conducted for (1) the development of low neutron-sensitive TLD (UD-170LS-T2), (2) the correlation of capture gamma-ray dose profile in a phantom for various collimator sizes, and (3) the formula for simple estimation of maximum gamma-ray dose on IOBNCT. The sensitivity of TLD, as $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray equivalent, for thermal neutron was 5.1$$pm$$0.8$$times$$10$$^{-14}$$($$^{60}$$Co-Gycm$$^{2}$$)The average relative deviations between predicted and measured $$gamma$$-ray dose for the mixed epithermal-thermal neutron beam in the phantom were $$pm$$8.5%. The accuracy of the $$gamma$$-ray dose determination in the clinical BNCT may be improved by this simple method.

Under the Research Committee on Reactor Physics, the Working Party on Reactor Physics of Accelerator-Driven System (ADS-WP) was set in July 1999 to review and investigate special subjects related to reactor physics research for the Accelerator-Driven Subcritical System (ADS).The ADS-WP, at the first meeting, discussed a task guideline of its activity for two years and decided to concentrate upon three subjects: (1) neutron transport calculations in high energy range, (2) static and kinetic (safety-related) characteristics of subcritical system, and (3) system design including ADS concepts and elemental technology developments required.The activity of ADS-WP continued from July 1999 to March 2001. In this duration, the members of ADS-WP met together four times and discussed the above subjects. In addition, the ADS-WP conducted a questionnaire on requests and proposals for the plan of Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility in the High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Project, which is a joint project between JAERI and KEK (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization).This report summarizes the results obtained by the above ADS-WP activity. The report will be useful to overview those results and moreover to set up a new guideline of future research activity in this field.

The third symposium on Science of Hadrons under Extreme Conditions, organized by the Research Group for Hadron Science, Advanced Science Research Center, was held at Tokai Research Establishment of JAERI on January 29 to 31, 2001. The symposium was devoted for discussions and presentations of research results in wide variety of hadron physics such as nuclear matter, high-energy nuclear reactions, quantum chromodynamics, neutron stars,supernovae, nucleosynthesis as well as finite nuclei to understand various aspects of hadrons under extreme conditions. Twenty two papers on these topics, including a special talk on the present status of JAERI-KEK joint project on high-intentisy proton accelerator, presented at the symposium aroused lively discussions among approximately 40 participants.
