Stainless steels of SS304, SS316L and such will be widely used in fusion reactor. Corrosion of such metals is an important issue for the establishment of safety and soundness of fusion reactors. It has recently been reported that the passivation of SS304 stainless steel was inhibited in tritiated solution, resulting in significant corrosion enhancement. Therefore in the present study, the effects of tritium on the passivation behavior of SS316L stainless steel in tritiated water circumstance is electrochemically studied by comparing to those of SS304 stainless steel previously studied. As the results, it was found that no significant effects of tritium on the passivation behavior of SS316L stainless steel could be observed, which is contrary to that of SS304 stainless steel.

Evaluation of susceptibility on crevice corrosion for ITER vacuum vessel

Nakahira, Masataka

JAERI-Tech 2003-083, 79 Pages, 2003/11

JAERI-Tech-2003-083.pdf:10.29MB

The ITER Vacuum Vessel has a double-walled structure and cooling water is filled in between inner and outer shells. It is planned to apply T-welded joints with partial penetration at the connection between outer shell and rib. The length and gap of non-penetrated part are controlled and limited to less than 5mm and 0.5mm respectively. Although it can be considered to be low susceptibility, crevice corrosion can possibly occur, because the water is stagnant in the crevice and impurities will condense. In this report, the corrosion-crevice repassivation potential, E$$_{R,CREV}$$, was experimentally measured under the several density of NaCl solution, and compared to the steady-state corrosion potential in the pertinent environment, to evaluate the susceptibility. Simulated conditions are normal operating condition with water temperature of 150$$^{circ}$$C, baking operation with water temperature of 200$$^{circ}$$C and impurity condense by cyclic wet and dry condition.

Inhibition of self-passivation of SUS304 stainless steel in tritiated water solution of sulfuric acid

Oyaizu, Makoto; Isobe, Kanetsugu; Hayashi, Takumi

no journal, ,

The corrosion behavior of SUS304 stainless steel and tritium effects of tritiated water on it were studied by means of electrochemical techniques. As the results, the self-passivation of SUS304 stainless steel in 1N sulfuric acid solution by dissolved oxygen was inhibited in tritiated water solution. It was also indicated that the self-passivation inhibitory effect could be induced by elution of chromium by further oxidation of trivalent chromium, which is one of the main components of passive layer, by highly oxidative radiolysis products.
