The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been carrying out the research on radiation damage mechanism of heat-resistant ceramics composite materials, as one of the subjects of the innovative basic research on high temperature engineering using the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR). A series of preliminary irradiation tests is being made using the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). The present report describes results of post-irradiation examinations so far on specimens irradiated in the second and third capsule, designated 98M-41A and 99M-30A, to fast neutron fluences of 1.0$$times$$10$$^{25}$$m$$^{-2}$$(E$$>$$1MeV) at temperatures of 973K-1173K and 1273K-1473K. The PIE were conducted as the fundamental statistics index of the diametral dimensions for irradiated specimen, irradiation induced dimensional change rate and thermal expansion rate.

The effect of laser annealing on electronic atructures and molecular orientation for poly(dimethylsilane), {PDMS, [Si(CH$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$]$$_{n}$$} has been studied by synchrotron radiation photoemission and photoabsorption spectroscopy. Prior to annealing, PDMS powder was mounted on the basal plane of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Both Si 1s X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at Si 1s edge show that electronic structures have been modified due to annealing. Furthermore, the angle-dependent NEXAFS spectra clearly indicate that the annealed products maintain a specific orientation. Interestingly, no such kind of orientation is present in as-received PDMS powder as no angle-dependency is observed before annealing.

Neutron irradiation remarkably reduces the thermal conductivity of graphite, and the reduced thermal conductivity is recovered by annealing effect if the graphite is heated above the irradiation temperature. Therefore, it is expected that the reduced thermal conductivity of graphite components in the HTGR could be recovered by the annealing effect in accidents, such as a depressurization accident. Then, an analytical investigation of the annealing effect on thermal performance of a HTGR core was carried. The analysis showed that the annealing effect reduces the maximum fuel temperature about 70$$^{circ}$$C, and it is important to introduce the annealing effect appropriately in the temperature analysis of the core components and reactor internals. In addition, an annealing test method was investigated to evaluate the effect quantitatively, and the test plan was made.

Accumulation of defects during energetic ion irradiation below $$sim$$10K in platinum thin films is studied by electrical resistivity measurements. Experimental results are analyzed by using a model which describes the production and selective radiation annealing of defects. For high-energy ($$sim$$100MeV) heavy ion irradiations, radiation annealing process due to electronic excitation is found mainly at the initial stage of irradiation. From the defect accumulation curve and defect recovery spectra, the effective temperature corresponding to the lattice agitation induced by electronic excitation is estimated.

Studies on the irradiation damage of the material of the RPV are inevitable for the LWR. Recently, the researches of annealing effect on the irradiation damage of RPV material were extensively carried out using specimens irradiated in the JMTR of the JAERI. As the next step, an annealing test of irradiated specimens and re-irradiation of annealed specimens were planned. The aim of the test is to evaluate the effect of annealing by comparing the damage of irradiated specimen, its recovery by annealing and the damage after re-irradiation. For the re-irradiation test of this study, JAERI developed a new capsule in which the specimens can be exchanged before and after annealing, and, re-irradiated afterward. The development of the capsule consisted of the design and fabrication of airtight connector for thermocouples and mechanical seal device which was fit to remote handling. Remote operation procedures for handling the radioactive capsule and for exchanging specimens were carefully performed. The results of the re-irradiation proved that the development was technically successful.
