A Plan of Proton Irradiation Facility at J-PARC and possibilities of application to nuclear data research

Maekawa, Fujio

JAEA-Conf 2022-001, p.7 - 13, 2022/11

The partitioning and transmutation (P-T) technology has promising potential for volume reduction and mitigation of degree of harmfulness of high-level radioactive waste. JAEA is developing the P-T technology combined with accelerator driven systems (ADS). One of critical issues affecting the feasibility of ADS is the proton beam window (PBW) which functions as a boundary between the accelerator and the sub-critical reactor core. The PBW is damaged by a high-intensity proton beam and spallation neutrons produced in the target, and also by flowing high-temperature liquid lead bismuth eutectic alloy which is corrosive to steel materials. To study the materials damage under the ADS environment, J-PARC is proposing a plan of proton irradiation facility which equips with a liquid lead-bismuth spallation target bombarded by a 400 MeV - 250 kW proton beam. The facility is also open for versatile purposes such as soft error testing of semi-conductor devises, RI production, materials irradiation for fission and fusion reactors, and so on. Application to nuclear data research with using the proton beam and spallation neutrons is also one of such versatile purposes, and we welcome unique ideas from the nuclear data community.

Standard of radiation monitor based on LAN and PLC technology for J-PARC

Miyamoto, Yukihiro; Sakamaki, Tsuyoshi*; Maekawa, Osamu*; Nakashima, Hiroshi

JAERI-Tech 2004-054, 72 Pages, 2004/08

JAERI-Tech-2004-054.pdf:7.3MB

A standard is provided for the radiation monitor based on LAN (Local Area Network) and PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) technology at the introduction to the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The monitor consists of radiation measurement equipments and the central monitoring panel. The formers are installed in the radiation field, and the latter is installed in the control room and composed of PLC, which are connected with LAN. Extension of the existing standard and the conformity to the international standard were thought as important in providing the standard. The standard is expected to improve the compatibility, maintenancability and productivity of the components.

A Development of a database system for the released radioactive gases and liquid from the nuclear facilities

Kikuchi, Masamitsu; Taki, Mitsumasa; Kume, Etsuo; Kobayashi, Hideo*; Yamada, Toshio*; Yamaguchi, Takenori

JAERI-Data/Code 2004-006, 146 Pages, 2004/03

JAERI-Data-Code-2004-006.pdf:6.87MB

The nuclear facilities, which are required to control the released radioactive gases and liquid, exist in Tokai research establishment as much as 40. These radioactive controls are carried out complying with the statutes in each facility. The released radioactivity data of each facility must be reported to MEXT and Ibaraki Prefecture from Tokai Research Establishment. This system is developed to make the database gathering the radioactivity data of each facilities for unitary control as Tokai Research Establishment and contribute to make the reports to MEXT and Ibaraki Prefecture.

Development of Decommissioning Engineering Support System(DEXUS) of the Fugen Nuclear Power Station

Iguchi, Yukihiro*; Kanehira, Yoshiki*; Tachibana, Mitsuo*; Johnsen, T.*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(3), p.367 - 375, 2004/03

The Fugen Nuclear Power Station (NPS) was shut down permanently in March 2003, and preparatory activities are underway to decommission the Fugen NPS. An engineering system to support the decommissioning is being developed to create a dismantling plan using state-of-the-art software such as 3-dimentional computer aided design (3D-CAD) and virtual reality (VR). In particular, an exposure dose evaluation system using VR has been developed and tested. The total system can be used to quantify radioactive waste, to visualize radioactive inventory, to simulate the dismantling plan, to evaluate workload in radiation environments and to optimize the decommissioning plan. The system will also be useful for educating and training workers and for gaining public acceptance.

Improvements to SFCOMPO; A Database on isotopic composition of spent nuclear fuel

Suyama, Kenya; Nouri, A.*; Mochizuki, Hiroki*; Nomura, Yasushi*

JAERI-Conf 2003-019, p.890 - 892, 2003/10

Isotopic composition is one of the most relevant data to be used in the calculation of burnup of irradiated nuclear fuel. Since autumn 2002, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency OECD/NEA) has operated a database of isotopic composition; SFCOMPO, initially developed in Japan Atomic Energy research Institute. This paper describes latest version of SFCOMPO and the future development plan in OECD/NEA.

Prediction of material behavior by database and neural network model within Bayesian framework

Tsuji, Hirokazu; Fujii, Hidetoshi*

Proceedings of 10th German-Japanese Workshop on Chemical Information, p.127 - 130, 2002/00

A neural network model within a Bayesian framework was adopted based on the material database constructed by JAERI for prediction of creep rupture properties of irradiated type 304 stainless steel. Stress level was modeled as a function of 18 variables, including rupture life, creep test temperature, chemical compositions; 10 elements, heat treatment temperature, heat treatment duration, neutron irradiation temperature, fast neutron fluence, thermal neutron fluence, irradiation time, based on JAERI material database in which 347 creep rupture data sets of type 304 stainless steels were stored. The Bayesian method puts error bars on the predicted values of the rupture strength and allows the significance of each individual factor to be estimated.
