The Five-cell Elliptical Superconducting Radio-Frequency Cavities (SRFC) provide the final acceleration in the JAEA-ADS linac (from 600 MeV to 1.5 GeV); thus, their performance is essential for the success of the JAEA-ADS project. After their optimization of the cavity geometry to achieve a high-acceleration gradient with lower electromagnetic peaks, the next step in the R&D strategy is the accurate estimation of beam-cavity effects which can affect the performance of the cavities. To this end, multipacting studies were developed to investigate its effect in the cavity operation regimen and find countermeasures. The results of this study will help in the development of the SRFC models and in the consolidation of the JAEA-ADS project.

Efficiency of the FEL strongly depends on performance of the optical resonator such as an output efficiency and interaction mode volume. The resonator geometry is optimized by maxmization of the output efficiency and minimization of the interaction mode volume. The output efficiency and the interaction mode volume of the optical resonator is calculated by a simulation code using Fox-Li procedure. To search rapidly with various parameters, the simulation code is improved utilizing Fast-Fourie-Transform.

A superconducting AVF cyclotron with a bending limit of 900 MeV and a focusing limit of 300 MeV is being designed to meet the requirements for the research in materials science and biotechnology at TIARA facility of JAERI. The spiral-sector shape of the cyclotron magnet has been optimized for acceleration of a 300 MeV proton to produce sufficient focusing forces in an extraction region. An energy range of the superconducting AVF cyclotron overlaps with that of the present K110 JAERI AVF cyclotron. Characteristics of a resonator for the superconducting AVF cyclotron have been investigated using the MAFIA code. An acceleration voltage in a frequency range of 24 to 64 MHz can be produced by the resonator with a /2 excitation mode.

The JAERI AVF cyclotron provides a variety of ion beams especially for the research in biotechnology and materials science. Several cyclotron technologies such as cocktail beam acceleration, a uniform irradiation in a wide area and beam pulsation have been developed so far. A flat-top acceleration system for the JAERI AVF cyclotron has been designed to minimize the energy spread mainly for a microbeam production. The flat-top acceleration using fundamental and fifth-harmonic frequencies for an acceleration voltage is an excellent technique to reduce the energy spread.
