Mutual separation of Ru, Rh, and Pd via reflux-assisted extraction and reverse-extraction using ion-pair and solvation with S- and amino-N-donor reagents

This study determined extraction and back-extraction conditions for the mutual separation of three light PGMs, Ru, Rh, and Pd. Results revealed that reagents containing soft N and S donor atoms efficiently extract and strip Pd through solvation. In comparison, Ru and Rh undergo ion-pair extraction, requiring both anionic metal species and cationic extractants. These essential chlorinated PGM anions and protonated extractants having amino N atoms are present in HCl media. D(Ru) and D(Rh) values of approximately 100 and 10, respectively, were obtained using nitrilo-triacet-amide (NTAamide), which exhibits tetradentate coordination. Refluxing in 3-6 M HCl at 250 $$^{circ}$$C, a condition that promotes the formation of highly chlorinated PGM anionic species, increased D(Ru) and D(Rh). Based on these findings, a flow diagram for the mutual separation of three PGMs was developed.

An experiment to search for Og isotopes using the $$^{50}$$Ti beam impinging on $$^{248}$$Cm target was performed at RIKEN Nishina Center. The optimal beam energy was determined from the quasielastic barrier distribution extracted from the excitation function of quasielastic backscattering. As a result, no Og decay was found, enabling only an estimation of the sensitivity for one event of 0.27 pb, and the 1$$sigma$$ cross section upper limit of 0.50 pb.

A Multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph for superheavy nuclei

The multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph has recently become of great utility in the study of superheavy nuclei. The device efficiently uses each ion and its operation is amenable to the inclusion of a decay detector being coupled into the time-of-flight (TOF) ion impact detector. In this way, TOF-decay correlation can be measured to unambiguously differentiate low-yield radioactive ions from stable molecular ions or dark counts. This will eventually allow the technique to be applied to the study of extremely low-yield nuclei such as those of $$_{113}$$Nh and $$_{115}$$Mc isotopes.

Recovery of rhodium by solvent extraction using $$N, N, N', N', N", N"$$-hexahexyl-nitrilotriacetamide and electrodeposition

The extraction behavior of Rh(III) with Hexahexyl-nitrilotriacetamide, NTAamide(C6) was investigated in three different diluents (acetophenone, AP, 1,2-dichloroethane, DCE, and 1-octanol, OC). The electrochemical behavior of the extracted Rh(III) complex in each diluent was investigated from linear sweep voltammetry. It was revealed that Rh(III) was reduced to Rh(0) metal by a three electron transfer in NTAamide(C6)/AP, DCE and OC system. The electrodeposits can be recovered from continuous solvent extraction and direct electrodeposition. The electrodeposits were identified by XPS and XRD analyses as mainly Rh metal.

Magnetic excitation in the hyperkagome antiferromagnet Mn$$_{3}$$RhSi

The magnetic excitation extends at least from 0.3 to 140 meV. The integrated inelastic scattering intensity leads to a localized magnetic moment of about 5$$mu_{B}$$ per Mn site fluctuating at 200 K in the wide energy range, although the long-range ordered magnetic moment is only 2.61$$mu_{B}$$ at 4 K. The result suggests that a large part of the magnetic moment does not order in Mn$$_{3}$$RhSi.

Effect of preparation conditions and storage time on characteristic and rheological properties of carbonate slurries

In the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, radioactive carbonate slurry waste was generated using the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) pretreatment and temporarily stored in a high integrity container (HIC). In 2015, overflow of supernatant from HIC estimate as bubble retention in the carbonate slurry was discovered, increasing the need for a safety assessment of the carbonate slurry stored the HIC (HIC slurry). In this study, a carbonate slurry (simulated slurry) was prepared according to the Mg/Ca mass ratio in the ALPS inlet water of the HIC slurry which overflew the HIC. The effects of reaction time during the pretreatment process, suspended solids concentration (SS concentration), and settling time on the particle composition, morphology and rheological properties of the slurry were investigated. Evaluating the effect of reaction time and concentration process on chemical properties in slurry production, the effect of the reaction time was not confirmed in the simulated slurry that had undergone the concentration process, and slurry prepared at SS concentration of 150 g/L was composed of formless particles have a particle diameter of 0.4 $$mu$$m or less. We also investigate the effect of SS concentration on sedimentability, decrease in SS concentration by dilution with processing solution contributed to an increase in the initial slurry settling velocity. Furthermore, two different flow characteristics were observed depending on the settling time, suggesting that the slurry at the initial settling time has non-Bingham flow properties, whereas it changes to Bingham flow properties as the settling time becomes longer. In addition, yield stress was increased with settling time, and this yield stress was found to be exponentially proportional to the density of the slurry. These results provide knowledge to estimate the current state of HIC slurry and are expected to contribute to the safety assessment.

Extraction of Rh from HCl can be performed by NTAamide(C6) (hexahexyl-nitrilotriacetamide) and other related compounds into n-dodecane. We use ion-pair extraction of anionic species of Rh-chloride and protonated extractant. Rh behave as anion in hydrochloric acid and the tertiary nitrogen atom in extractant may be protonated to produce the quaternary amine in acidic condition. From the present work, the maximum distribution ratio of Rh(III) is 16. The D(Rh) values are changeable during preparation of the aqueous solutions because different Rh-Cl-H$$_{2}$$O complexes are formed in HCl media and show the slow exchange rate between Cl and H$$_{2}$$O. Using the UV spectrum, Rh-chloride solution having the peak of spectrum at 504 nm can be extracted effectively, where RhCl$$_{4}$$(H$$_{2}$$O)$$^-$$ and RhCl$$_5$$(H$$_2$$O)$$^2$$$$^-$$ exist mainly from DFT calculation. Stoichiometry of one-one complex of Rh and NTAamide is obtained from slope analysis, and 85 mM of concentrated Rh ion can be extracted.

We show that the local spin correlation order has a spiral structure by neutron scattering measurement of a Mn$$_{3}$$RhSi single crystal. The possible origins of the magnetic cluster formation are discussed in terms of the Lifshitz invariant and the Griffiths phase, and compared with the room-temperature skyrmion phase of Co$$_{7}$$Zn$$_{7}$$Mn$$_{6}$$ and non-Fermi liquid behavior of $$beta$$-Mn.

Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. The first chemical experiment on Fl suggested that Fl is a noble-gas-like element, while the second studies suggested that Fl has a volatile-metal-like character. To obtain more reliable conclusion, we performed further experimental studies on Fl adsorption behavior on Si oxide and gold surfaces. The present results suggest that Fl is highly volatile and less reactive than the volatile metal, Hg, but has higher reactivity than the noble gas, Rn.

A search for production of the superheavy elements with atomic numbers 119 and 120 was performed in the $$^{50}$$Ti+$$^{249}$$Bk and $$^{50}$$Ti+$$^{249}$$Cf fusion-evaporation reactions, respectively, at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Over four months of irradiation, neither was detected at cross-section sensitivity levels of 65 and 200 fb, respectively. The non-observation of elements 119 and 120 is discussed within the concept of fusion-evaporation reactions including various theoretical predictions on the fission-barrier heights of superheavy nuclei in the region of the island of stability.

Evaluation of occurrence possibility of tube failure propagation under sodium-water reaction accident is an important issue. In this study, a numerical analysis method to predict occurrence of failure propagation by overheating rupture was constructed to expand application range of an existing computer code. Applicability of the method was constructed through the numerical analysis of the experiment on water vapor discharging in liquid sodium. To improve the evaluation accuracy for the temperature distribution, a Lagrangian particle model for simulating reacting jet was also developed as an alternative method and its basic function was confirmed.

Orbitally defined field-induced electronic state in a Kondo lattice

CeRhIn$$_5$$ is a Kondo-lattice prototype in which a magnetic field $$B^{ast}$$ $$simeq$$ 31T induces an abrupt Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction and pronounced in-plane electrical transport anisotropy all within its antiferromagnetic state. Here we report low-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements revealing a pronounced decrease in the $$^{115}$$In formal Knight shift, without changes in crystal or magnetic structures, of CeRhIn$$_5$$ at fields ($$||c$$) spanning $$B^{ast}$$. We discuss the emergent state above $$B^{ast}$$ in terms of a change in Ce's 4$$f$$ orbitals that arises from field-induced evolution of crystal-electric field (CEF) energy levels. This change in orbital character enhances hybridization between the 4$$f$$ and the conduction electrons that leads ultimately to an itinerant quantum-critical point at $$B_{c0}$$ $$simeq$$ 50T.
