In order to implement it into an actual moderator-reflector assembly, a number of critical engineering issues need to be resolved with regard to large-sized bonding between AuIC and A5083 alloys by the hot isostatic pressing process. We investigated this process in terms of the surface conditions, sizes, and heat capacities of large AuIC alloys. We also show a successful implementation of an AuIC decoupler into a reflector assembly, resulting in a remarkable reduction of radioactivity by AuIC compared to AIC without sacrificing neutronic performance.

Selective excitation was carried out by pulse shaping of ultrashort laser pulses which were adaptively modulated in a closed-loop learning system handling eight parameters representing the electric field. Two-color fluorescence from the respective excited states was monitored to measure the selectivity. The fitness used in the learning algorithm was evaluated from the ratio of the fluorescence yield. After fifty generations, a pair of nearly transform-limitted pulses were obtained as an optimal pulse shape, proving the effectiveness of "Ramsey fringes" mechanism. The contrast of the selection ratio was improved by 30 % from the simple "Ramsey fringes" experiment.

In a high-gain FEL oscillator, frequency chirp is induced in the slippage region as a result of superradiant FEL resonance, and this time-frequency correlation evolves continuously into a few-cycle regime, if the optical cavity length is perfectly synchronized to the electron bunch interval. Numerical simulations based on slowly-evolving-wave-approximation (SEWA) and experimental results are presented.

Our discussions on the supertool will cover market-requirements for the industrial FELs, some answers from the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off cryostat concept and operational experience over these 8 years, our discovery of the new, highly-efficient, high-power, and ultra-short pulse lasing mode[3], and the energy-recovery geometry.

We need a powerful and efficient free-electron laser(FEL) for industrial uses, for examples, pharmacy, medical, defense, shipbuilding, semiconductor industry, chemical industries, environmental sciences, space-debris, power beaming and so on. In order to realize such a tunable, highly-efficient, high average power, high peak power and ultra-short pulse FEL, the JAERI FEL group and I have successfully demonstrated the efficient and powerful FEL driven by a compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off super-conducting rf linac with an energy-recovery geometry. Our discussions on the FEL will cover market-requirements for the industrial FELs, some answers from the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off cryostat concept and operational experience over these 8 years, our discovery of the new, highly-efficient, high-power, and ultra-short pulse lasing mode, and the energy-recovery geometry.

We are developing remote in-situ analysis by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for simple in-situ screening analysis of fuel debris in the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. For various application scenarios, microchip laser based LIBS for ultra-long distance analysis, microwave assisted LIBS for signal enhancement, and long/short double pulse laser LIBS for water-containing samples are developing as the fiber-optic LIBS system. To have the reliability, valuation with nuclear fuel materials and spent fuel, and radiation resistance test by Co irradiation will be planed. As a challenging trial, a development of Machine learning technique has introduced for automatically analysis of LIBS spectra.
