7 surface by lever rule. Surface and interface of Hf/Si(111) contain three components (metallic Hf layers, Hf monosilicide (HfSi) and Si-rich Hf silicide). Ultrathin Hf layers changes HfSi
islands on bared Si(111)-7
7 surface after annealing at 1073 K. It was found that the long axes of the rectangle islands expand the direction connecting the corner holes in DAS model of clean Si(111)-7
7 surface.

molecular beams, we present a comparative study of oxide evolution at a Si(111)-7
7 surface at room temperature. Real-time observations of oxides were conducted by employing synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that ins structure is the common first product for oxidation by thermal-O
and supersonic O
molecular beams. Similarities between them for oxide evolution were found and illustrate the notion that translational energy of thermal O
can be ascribed to the average molecular kinetic energy defined based on the most probable speed of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. This experimental result suggests that translational energy is the unifying reaction parameter that rationalizes adsorption mechanisms.

W/cm
and a pulse duration of 30 fs acting upon micron-sized Ar clusters. The measured total photon flux and line width in the He
line (3.14 keV) were 4
10
photons/shot/4
sr and 3.7 eV (FWHM), respectively, which is sufficient to utilize as a debris-free light source for time-resolved X-ray diffraction studies.

The diffraction pattern clearly exhibited the 1/7-th to 3/7-th order Laue zones in addition to the zero-th and first Laue zones. From the dynamical calculation of the rocking curve in the total reflection region, the vertical position of adatom layer was determined to be 1.52
relative to the stacking fault layer. This value is greater than that predicted in the first principles study suggesting a significant outward relaxation of adatoms.
