A superconducting accelerating cavity is indispensable to realize a driver linac that meets the requirements of ADS. The low-energy section of the accelerators, which is normal conducting one, was redesigned to reflect the recent progress in the development of superconducting accelerator cavities. In addition, we are developing a prototype cavity for the spoke-type cavity that has not been developed well. This section reports on the latest research and development of ADS linacs at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

Nuclear fragmentation by tunneling

Fragmentation of nuclear system by tunneling is discussed by molecular dynamics simulation coupled with imaginary time method. In this way we obtain informations on the fragmenting systems at low densities and low temperatures. These conditions cannot be reached normally (i.e. above the barrier) in nucleus-nucleus or nucleon-nucleus collisions. The price to pay is the small probability of fragmentation by tunneling but we obtain some observables which can be a clear signature of such phenomena.

JAEA has developed design tools to assess the thermal-hydraulic behavior and structural stresses on the beam windows (BW) of an accelerator-driven system (ADS). These tools require experimental validation to ensure the accuracy for design optimization. However, due to the difficulty of performing experiments, validation by numerical simulation has become important in recent years. Therefore, a coupling platform was developed between the detailed thermal-hydraulic analysis code JUPITER and the structure analysis code FrontISTR. In previous work, the one-way coupling scheme was implemented. However, the one-way method is still insufficient in calculating the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) phenomena in ADS beam window. This presentation provides an overview of the JUPITER-FrontISTR two-way weak coupling platform for FSI analysis.
