Interstitial alloying is an effective strategy for enhancing the mechanical properties of high-entropy alloys (HEAs). However, in carbon-containing HEAs, the coexistence of interstitial carbon and carbides complicates the investigation of interstitial carbon's individual effects on strength and ductility. To address this, a carbide-free interstitial strengthened HEA, FeMnCoNiC$$_{rm x}$$, was designed by incorporating elements with low carbon affinity, enabling a clear assessment of the role of interstitial carbon. The results demonstrate that interstitial carbon solution simultaneously improves strength, ductility, and work hardening capability. Synchrotron radiation experiments reveal that the interstitial carbon containing alloy sustains higher lattice elastic strain, dislocation density, and stacking fault probability during tensile deformation, with the increased dislocation density being the primary contributor to enhanced work hardening. First principles calculations further elucidate the lattice distortion, chemical inhomogeneity and electronic localization effects induced by interstitial carbon, as well as their potential influence on strength and ductility. This study highlights the importance of carbide-free interstitial carbon-strengthened HEAs for a fundamental understanding of carbon's influence on mechanical properties.

Here, we investigated the room-temperature (298 K) and cryogenic-temperature (77 K) mechanical behaviors of binary Al-Mg alloys over a wide range of Mg concentrations (2.8-13.1 at.%). A ductile-to-brittle transition was observed at 77 K as the Mg content increased from 7.5 to 13.1 at.%, accompanied by a significant decrease in impact energy from 161 J to 14 J. Through detailed theoretical calculations and experimental observations, this composition-dependent transition was found to be primarily associated with Mg segregation-induced grain boundary (GB) expansion and charge density depletion at the GB. These findings not only address the growing demand for durable lightweight materials for low-temperature applications, but also provide insights into the design of ultralight aerospace structural materials capable of withstanding the harsh environments encountered in space exploration.

Dynamic strain aging (DSA) causes serrated flow, known as the Portevin-Le Ch$^{a}$telier (PLC) effect, through interactions between solute atoms and dislocations. In this study, tensile tests on an Al-Mg-Zn crossover solid-solution alloy revealed that DSA and strain-induced dynamic precipitation jointly control serration behavior. At low strain rates, DSA-assisted precipitation produced Type C serrations, whereas high strain rates suppressed precipitation and promoted Type A serrations. High-energy X-ray diffraction and TEM analyses showed that screw dislocations dominated early deformation and governed plastic flow localization through cross-slip. Frequent cross-slip at high strain rates generated dislocation microbands responsible for Type A serrations, highlighting the primary role of screw dislocations rather than edge dislocations. A constitutive model incorporating DSA-assisted strengthening successfully predicted flow behavior over a wide strain-rate range.

Dual-phase (DP) high- and medium-entropy alloys (H/MEAs), consisting of face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) phases, have attracted attention because of their excellent strength-ductility balance. However, the temperature dependence of hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) strengthening remains unclear. In this study, an Al$$_{7}$$(CoNiV)$$_{93}$$ DP MEA was investigated using in-situ neutron diffraction and multiscale electron microscopy. Both intrinsic strength and HDI strengthening increased at cryogenic temperature. This enhancement originated from the increased lattice friction stress of the hard BCC phase and suppressed dislocation mobility at low temperature, which promoted dislocation accumulation at heterogeneous interfaces. These findings provide insights into temperature-dependent HDI strengthening in DP H/MEAs and related alloy systems.

QST-M-56; QST Takasaki Annual Report 2024, P. 28, 2026/02

This study continues our investigation of FeCrAl alloys, promising candidates for accident-tolerant fuel cladding materials, aiming to clarify the precipitation behavior of the embrittlement phase ($$alpha$$' phase) and to contribute to the development of a predictive model. In FY2024, the irradiation dose was increased from the previously achieved 0.3 dpa, and data up to 0.64 dpa (partially 1.44 dpa) were obtained. This enabled the development of an $$alpha$$' phase precipitation map using chemical composition, damage rate, and damage dose as parameters. Multiple regression analysis quantitatively demonstrated that a decrease in damage rate, along with increases in Cr concentration and damage dose, tends to increase precipitation volume fraction. Notably, Al addition was found to suppresses $$alpha$$' phase precipitation, providing important insights for alloy design.

Body-centered cubic (BCC) metals typically exhibit high yield strength but limited work hardening and uniform elongation, especially at low temperatures. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) offer opportunities to overcome these limitations, though their deformation mechanisms remain unclear. Using in situ neutron diffraction and microstructural analysis, this study identifies the origin of the exceptionally large uniform elongation at liquid nitrogen temperature in a single-phase BCC (TiZrHf)$$_{86.4}$$Al$$_2$$Nb$$_{11.6}$$ HEA. Initial plastic deformation is governed by a BCC-to-orthorhombic ($$alpha$$") transformation, followed by $$alpha$$" twinning and deformation-induced amorphization at later stages. The cooperation of these mechanisms suppresses work softening from dislocation plasticity, enabling high yield strength with large uniform elongation and providing a viable strategy for designing cryogenic structural materials.

The deformation behavior and strengthening mechanism of Inconel 718 with a hierarchical structure composed of microscale crystallographic lamellar microstructure (CLM) and nanoscale cellular structure, fabricated by laser powder bed fusion, were clarified via nanoscale microstructural and in-situ neutron diffraction analyses. The CLM is a layered structure parallel to the building direction (BD) and consists of relatively wide main and narrow sub-layers with $$<$$110$$>$$ and $$<$$100$$>$$ orientations, respectively, with respect to BD. This is the first study to demonstrate that the yield stress of the alloys depends strongly on deformation stresses of the sub-layers, even though Schmid factors of the primary slip system for both layers are the same. The sub-layer continues to deform elastically even beyond the micro-yield point of the main layer, which results in the macroscopic strengthening at an early stage of deformation. On the other hand, the cellular structure is formed in both layers, associated with a dendritic cell growth along $$<$$100$$>$$ direction, Nb segregation between the cells and an accumulation of dislocations to decrease a residual stress. The cell boundaries with numerous dislocations and Nb segregation act as a strong barrier to dislocation motion resulting in a stress increase through the Hall-Petch law, even though they are low-angle grain boundaries. The spacing and morphology of the cell boundary depend strongly on fabrication conditions. The optimized cellular structure provides significant strengthening comparable to or greater than that caused by large-angle grain boundaries, thereby increasing the macroscopic strength of the alloys through hardening of the sub-layer.

Precipitation hardening strengthens FCC alloys but often reduces ductility. This study shows that precipitates can also modify deformation behavior to mitigate this trade-off. An FeCrNiAlTi FCC alloy fabricated by laser additive manufacturing contains incoherent L2$$_1$$ precipitates at cell walls and coherent L1$$_2$$ precipitates within cells. By controlling precipitation, an excellent strength-ductility balance was achieved at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures. High-density precipitates provide strengthening while promoting deformation-induced stacking faults and twinning, thereby enhancing work hardening via strain heterogeneity. In situ neutron diffraction indicates that post-yield lattice strain governs stacking fault and twin formation. Simulations show that interfacial misfit of the L2$$_1$$ phase and the size and spacing of the L1$$_2$$ phase amplify local strain.

The cellular structure plays a key role in determining the mechanical properties of metal additive manufacturing (MAM) components. This study presents in situ neutron diffraction and dislocation density-based modeling for a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) made via directed energy deposition (DED). A constitutive model based on the Kocks-Mecking-Estrin framework was used to represent the cellular structure. Parametric analysis showed lower dislocation accumulation and annihilation rates in the as-built sample (with cellular structure) than in the heat-treated one. These differences are linked to dislocation forest networks and local stacking fault energy variations. Dislocation density across cell interiors and walls was also compared with deformation-induced dislocation cells.

High-strength structural alloys are essential for advanced engineering. This study explores the mechanical behavior of a dual-phase AlCoNiV medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with FCC and BCC phases. The alloy shows excellent performance, with a yield strength of 1148 MPa, tensile strength of 1556 MPa, and 40% uniform elongation. In-situ neutron diffraction and EBSD analyses reveal that strength originates from the intrinsic responses of both phases. The BCC phase carries more load, while dislocation buildup at phase boundaries enhances strength via hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) strengthening. Synergistic effects, including stress partitioning and load redistribution, further improve mechanical performance. These findings highlight the role of phase-specific properties and interphase interactions in alloy robustness and offer insights for microstructural optimization.

Microscopic insights into the mechanical behavior of a Ni-Co-based superalloy through ${it in-situ}$ neutron diffraction

The micromechanical behaviors and dislocation evolution in a polycrystalline Ni-Co-based superalloy were systematically investigated by ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction tensile testing combined with line profile analysis. The results reveal the sequential activation of $$gamma$$' shearing and Orowan looping mechanisms, with interphase load partitioning governed by strain-dependent interactions of dislocation and precipitate. During the initial plastic deformation, the $$gamma$$ and $$gamma$$' phases undergo co-deformation through dislocation shearing without load transfer, while the Orowan looping facilitates the load transfer from $$gamma$$ to $$gamma$$' phase at a higher strain level. Furthermore, the low stacking fault energy leads to a rising fraction of screw dislocations by suppressing cross-slip. Crucially, the pinning effect of $$gamma$$' precipitates hinders the rearrangement of these dislocations into low-energy structures, resulting in the formation of high-energy, weakly screened dislocation configurations. These findings provide new evidence for the planar slip dominance in Ni-Co-based superalloys, enabling quantitative assessment of microstructural evolution and micromechanical responses.

In this work, we harness a hierarchical microstructure to simultaneously tailor strengthening and deformation mechanisms in a Co$$_{21}$$Cr$$_{12.5}$$Fe$$_{55}$$Ni$$_{4}$$Mo$$_{7.5}$$ (at%) ferrous medium-entropy alloy (MEA). A simple thermomechanical process (cold rolling and 90 s annealing) produces ultrafine recrystallized grains, non-recrystallized grains with substructures, and intragranular nanoprecipitates. This structure, with high dislocation density and fine grains, yields a high strength of $$sim$$1.60 GPa but can risk premature fracture. To overcome this, L$"u$ders deformation, enabled by ultrafine grain boundaries and stress-induced martensitic transformation at pre-existing nucleation sites, is employed. Stable L$"u$ders band propagation delays strain hardening and enables large uniform ductility. As a result, a tensile strength of $$sim$$1.84 GPa and uniform elongation of $$sim$$20% are achieved, matching the best tensile properties among reported multi-principal element alloys.

Face-centered cubic (FCC) equi-atomic multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) exhibit excellent mechanical properties from cryogenic to room temperatures. At room temperature, deformation is dominated by dislocation slip, while at cryogenic temperatures (CTs), reduced stacking fault energy enhances strain hardening with twinning. This study uses in-situ neutron diffraction to analyze the temperature-dependent deformation behavior of Al$$_{7}$$(CoNiV)$$_{93}$$, a dual-phase (FCC/BCC) medium-entropy alloy (MEA). At liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT), deformation twinning in the FCC matrix leads to additional strain hardening through the dynamic Hall-Petch effect, giving the appearance of improved strengthening at LNT. In contrast, BCC precipitates show dislocation slip at both 77 K and 298 K, with temperature-dependent lattice friction stress playing a significant role in strengthening. The study enhances understanding of deformation behaviors and provides insights for future alloy design.

Shape Memory and Superelasticity, 11(2), p.167 - 175, 2025/06

The microstructure, crystal structures, cold workability, and martensitic transformation temperatures of several Cu$$_{100-{it x}-{it y}}$$Mn$$_{it x}$$Al$$_{it y}$$ (40 $$leq$$ ${it x}$ $$leq$$ 55; 10 $$leq$$ ${it y}$ $$leq$$ 13; at%) alloys were analyzed. For the first time, martensitic transformation was revealed Mn-rich Cu-Mn-Al alloys. The surface relief of the martensite phase reversibly appeared and disappeared during cooling and heating, along with small thermal hysteresis, implying a thermoelastic transformation. The crystal structures of the parent and martensite phases are B2 and 2M(BCT), respectively, with c$/a being approximately 1.35. Cold workability improves with decreasing Al content, exhibiting a trend similar to that observed for previously reported Cu-rich Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloys. The martensitic transformation temperatures decrease with increasing Al content and increase with increasing Mn content. These results are consistent with the stability trends of the parent body-centered cubic phase in the phase diagram at high temperature. The shape memory effect with a recovery strain of 1.3% was observed in a 5.0% pre-stretched Cu$_{39}$$Mn$$_{50}$$Al$$_{11}$$ (at%) sample. This alloy demonstrates moderate cold workability and cost-effectiveness, exhibiting potential as an alternative for conventional shape memory alloys in various applications.

The need for lightweight materials with mechanical integrity at ultralow temperatures drives the development of advanced alloys for cryogenic use. Additive manufacturing via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) offers a scalable way to create alloys with tailored properties. Here, we show that LPBF-processed Al10SiMg exhibits a high ultimate tensile strength (395 MPa) and uniform elongation (25%) at 15 K. These enhancements stem from grain refinement, increased geometrically necessary dislocations, and stress partitioning between the Al matrix and the stiffer Si phase, aiding strain accommodation. ${it In-situ}$ neutron diffraction reveals that the Si phase, with its higher yield strength, bears most of the load, while the Al matrix undergoes continuous strain hardening, extending deformation capacity. These results highlight Al10SiMg's promise for cryogenic applications such as hydrogen storage, aerospace, and quantum computing hardware.

Face-centered cubic (fcc) medium-/high-entropy alloys (M/HEAs) typically enhance strength and ductility at cryogenic temperatures via stacking faults, twinning, or martensitic transformation. However, in-situ neutron diffraction on VCoNi MEA at 15 K reveals that strain hardening is driven solely by rapid dislocation accumulation, without these mechanisms. This results in increased yield strength, strain hardening, and fracture strain. The behavior, explained by the Orowan equation, challenges conventional views on cryogenic strengthening in fcc M/HEAs and highlights the role of dislocation-mediated plasticity at low temperatures.

Heterostructured materials (HSMs) improve the strength-ductility trade-off of alloys, but their cryogenic performance under real-time deformation is unclear. We studied heterostructured CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy via ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction at 77 K and 293 K. A significant mechanical mismatch between fine and coarse grains led to an exceptional yield strength of 918 MPa at 293 K, increasing to 1244 MPa at 77 K with a uniform elongation of 34%. This strength-ductility synergy at 77 K is attributed to high dislocation pile-up density, increased planar faults, and martensitic transformation. Compared to homogeneous alloys, HSMs show promise for enhancing cryogenic mechanical performance in medium-/high-entropy alloys.

It has long been suspected that magnetism could play a vital role in the phase stability of multi- component high-entropy alloys. However, the nature of the magnetic order, if any, has remained elusive. Here, by using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, we demonstrate evidence of antiferromagnetic order below $$sim$$80 K and strong spin fluctuations persisting to room temperature in a single-phase face-centered cubic (fcc) CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy. Despite the chemical complexity, the magnetic structure in CrMnFeCoNi can be described as $$gamma$$-Mn-like, with the magnetic moments confined in alternating (001) planes and pointing toward the $$langle$$111$$rangle$$ direction. Combined with first-principles calculation results, it is shown that the antiferromagnetic order and spin fluctuations help stabilized the fcc phase in CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy.

Nanoscale chemical fluctuations and their effect on the deformation behavior of CrFeCoNi-based high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were investigated using small-angle scattering and in situ neutron diffraction measurements. Small-angle scattering results demonstrated the presence of nano ($$>$$10 nm) chemical fluctuations in the as-prepared CrFeCoNiPd HEAs, which was attributed to the negative mixing of enthalpy and the significant atomic radius difference between Pd and the constituent elements in the CrFeCoNi-based alloys. Subsequent tensile tests demonstrated that the yield and tensile strengths of the as-prepared CrFeCoNiPd HEA surpass those of the as-prepared CrMnFeCoNi HEA. Neutron diffraction data analysis revealed an anomalous response of dislocation evolution with the strain.
