In order to establish the system integration technology to connect a hydrogen production system to a high temperature gas cooled reactor, the mock-up test facility with a full-scale reaction tube for the steam reforming HTTR hydrogen production system was constructed in fiscal year 2001 and its functional test operation was performed in the year. Seven experimental test operations were performed from fiscal year 2001 to 2004. On a period of each test operation, there happened some troubles. For each trouble, the cause was investigated and the countermeasures and the improvement works were performed to succeed the experiments. The tests were successfully achieved according to plan. This report describes the improvement works on the test facility performed from fiscal year 2001 to 2004.
JAERI's Internal Investigation Group on the Ruptured Glove; Department of Decommissioning and Waste Management
JAERI-Review 2002-017, 121 Pages, 2002/09
On November 21st, 2001, the glove rupture arose at an incinerator of Waste Treatment Building No.1 in JAERI Tokai Research Establishment. In order to examine the cause and recurrence prevention measure of the rupture, JAERI's Internal Investigation Group on the Ruptured Glove investigated the conditions of the incinerator including ash removing equipment and the glove, types and properties of waste which was incinerated on that day, and background factor of the trouble in cooperation with Department of Decommissioning and Waste Management. As the result, the causes of the rupture were that the solidification of liquid scintillator waste was insufficient, that the protective cover of the glove does not have pressure resistance and the degraded glove was used. For preventing the recurrence of the trouble, the direct confirmation of the solidification condition, the installation of protective cover for the glove, the improvement of the management of the glove, review of manuals and education and training were carried out.

The JT-60U is a large tokamak upgraded from the original JT-60 to obtain high plasma current, large plasma volume and highly elongated divertor configurations. In the modification, all components inside the bore of toroidal magnetic field coils, a vacuum vessel, poloidal magnetic field coils (PF-coils), divertor etc., were renewed. Furthermore, boron carbide converted CFC tiles were used as divertor tiles to reduce erosion of carbon-base tiles. Later, a semi-closed divertor with pumps was installed in the replacement of the open divertor. Various technologies and ideas introduced to develop these components their operational experiences provide important data for designing future tokamaks. Also, major troubles that had influence on the JT-60U operations are described. As a maintenance issue for tokamaks using deuterium fueling gas, a method for reducing radiation exposure of in-vessel workers are introduced.
