The localized 5$$f$$ states with 5$$f^2$$ ($$^3H_4$$) configuration of U$$^{4+}$$ ion have been revealed in UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$. We found that the low-lying states are the same as PrPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ flat orbitals with large $$J_z$$ are stabilized by a two-dimensional CEF potential in the unique crystal structure. The present study involves the valence crossover from tetravalent to trivalent in a series of AnPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, demonstrated by lattice and/or transport anomaly as well as many body effects in the vicinity of the boundary. The valence instability plays important role for the unusual heavy fermion superconductivity in NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$.

We revisit the delocalized character of the 4$$f$$ states of CeFe$$_2$$ in the ferromagnetically ordered phase by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with improved data quality using single crystals. Surprisingly, the Ce $$M_{4,5}$$ XMCD spectral shape changes significantly as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, with no concomitant changes in the spectral shape of the Ce $$M_{4,5}$$ XAS as well as the Fe $$L_{2,3}$$ XAS and XMCD. This unusual behavior is characterized by the $$J=7/2$$ states in a 4$$f^1$$ configuration mixed into the $$J=5/2$$ ground state. Such extreme sensitivity of the Ce 4$$f$$ states to the external perturbations can be related to the magnetic instability toward an antiferromagnetic phase in CeFe$$_2$$. Our experimental data presented here provide valuable insights into the underlying physics in strongly-hybridized ferromagnetic Ce compounds.

Valence state in Ce-based heavy fermion compounds at high magnetic fields

Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy of CeRh$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ has been performed in pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 32 T. The Ce valence is slightly larger than 3+ at 5 K and decreases with increasing magnetic above 20 T. The field-induced valence change seems to correspond to the metamagnetic transition in the magnetization process. This phenomena is similar to our previous result on CeRu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ and seems to be common in Ce-based heavy fermion compounds.

The valence state of Yb ions in $$alpha$$- and $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ has been investigated by X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. It is found that the valence gradually increases with increasing temperature toward 3+ and that the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuations is about 290 K. We also observe a small increase in the Yb valence ($$sim$$ 0.002) in $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ by a magnetic field of 32 T at 40 K.

Development of three kinds of tissue substitutes for a physical phantom in neutron dosimetry

Three kinds of tissue substitutes were synthesized in order to develop a physical phantom for neutron dosimetry. The optimal elemental compositions and densities were determined using a Monte Carlo simulation method, based on absorbed dose distributions of neutrons of a few MeV in various materials. The characteristics of the synthesized tissue substitutes were verified by absorbed dose measurements using monoenergetic neutron sources and a $$^{252}$$Cf neutron source. It was found that the developed tissue substitutes, NAN-, HAI- and HONE-JAERI, have tissue equivalence to actual tissues within 10 % accuracy for neutrons in most of common fast neutron fields.

The filled skutterudite compounds $$RT_{4}X_{9}$$ ($$R$$ = alkaline earth, rare earth, actinide; $$T$$ = Fe, Ru, Os; $$X$$ = pnictogen: P, As, Sb) exhibit a variety of physical properties such as superconductivity, magnetic ordering, heavy-Fermion behavior, and metal-insulator transition. Among them, YbFe$$_{4}$$Sb$$_{12}$$ shows a heavy-Fermion or intermediate-valence behavior in the magnetic, electrical transport, and thermal properties, which might be associated with a valence instability of Yb atom. In this study, the electronic structure of YbFe$$_{4}$$Sb$$_{12}$$ have been investigated by the high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy, using He discharge lamp and synchrotron radiation as an excitation sources. The bulk and surface components of the Yb$$^{2+}$$ signal is clearly divided in the spectra. The relation of the energy position between them is anomalous compared to that of the conventional mixed-valent Yb compounds.
