The hybrid pixel detector was designed with a pixel size of 200 micro-meter by 200 micro-meter and an area of 19 mm by 20 mm or 38.2 mm by 40.2 mm. The photon-counting ASIC, SP8-04F10K, has a preamplifier, a shaper, 3-level window-type discriminators and a 24-bits counter in each pixel. The single-chip detector with 100 by 95 pixels successfully operated with a photon-counting mode selecting X-ray energy with the window comparator and stable operation was realized at 20C. We have performed a feasibility study for a white X-ray microbeam experiment. Laue diffraction patterns were measured during the scan of the irradiated position in a silicon steel sample. The grain boundaries were identified by using the differentials between adjacent images at each position.

Huge forging presses enable materials processing in the 10 GPa range and hence, it is necessary to investigate the phase-diagrams of candidate materials under these extreme conditions. Here we report on an in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study in a large-volume-press of a modern ( +
) two-phase material, Ti-45Al-7.5Nb-0.25C, under pressures up to 9.6 GPa and temperatures up to 1686 K. At room temperature, the volume response to pressure is accommodated by the transformation
rather than volumetric strain, expressed by apparently high bulk moduli of both constituent phases. Crystallographic aspects, specifically lattice strain and atomic order are discussed in detail. It is interesting to note that this transformation takes place despite an increase in atomic volume, which is due to the high ordering energy of
. Upon heating under high pressure, both the eutectoid and
-solvus transition temperatures are elevated, and a third, cubic
-phase is stabilized above 1350 K. Earlier research has shown that this
-phase is very ductile during plastic deformation, essential in near-conventional forging processes. Here, we were able to identify an ideal processing window for near-conventional forging, while the presence of the detrimental
-phase is not present under operating conditions. Novel processing routes can be defined from these findings.

. This compound exhibits antiferro-octupole order (AFO) below
= 1.4 K, and it is theoretically suggested that ferroquadrupole moments and a resultant rhombohedral deformation are induced in the AFO phase. We observe the splitting of Bragg reflections below
and find that the unit cell is rhombohedral with the elongated [111] axis. We also precisely evaluate the magnitude of the induced quadrupole moments from the obtained shear strain and find that the quadrupole moments are not reduced in the AFO phase.

below 1.5 K by resonant X-ray diffraction in magnetic fields. Multipole moments induced by the field in the AFO phase are identified. In a mean-field model for the
AFO order within the

antiferroquadrupoles (AFQ) are expected as mostly induced AFQ. However, in contrast to this expectation, the main induced moment is found to be the

To better understand a fundamental aspect of the laser cluster interaction, we have carried out systematic investigations of X-ray radiation properties of high-density and high-temperature cluster plasma, created by the action of superintense laser irradiation. The interrelationship between the X-ray radiation properties and ion kinetic energies has been for the first time examined by the simultaneous measurements of X-ray radiation spectra and ion energy spectra. Time scale and mechanism of X-ray emission process have been discussed based on a time-dependent plasma kinetics model. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the practical capability of X-rays thus produced, the pulse X-ray diffraction has been examined from Si crystal with this source.

The atomic coordinates and Debye-Waller factors were determined up to the sixth layer from the surface. The results support the formation of the Ga-As heterodimers. The resultant atomic coordinates were compared with those given by a first-principle calculation. In spite of the theoretical prediction of the stability of the single-heterodimer structure, our data fit best a three-heterodimer model where three heterodimers are present in one unit cell. The preference of the formation of the three heterodimers will be discussed in the relationship with the transition process from the 2
4 to the c(4
4) structures.

Advanced Light Source (ALS) Beamline 6.0 is designed for X-ray absorption spectroscopy with femtosecond X-ray pulses generated by the bunch "slicing" technique. Soft and hard X-ray branch lines will cover a wide photon energy range from 120 eV to 10 keV. A soft X-ray spectrograph will collect absorption spectra dispersively. The application of laminar gratings to dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the photon energy range 2- 8 keV has been investigated.

It was previously reported that RAFs (F82H-IEA and its heat treatment variant, ORNL9Cr-2WVTa, JLF-1 and 2%Ni doped F82H) shows variety of changes on its ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) and yield stress after irradiation at 573K up to 5dpa. These differences could not be interpreted as an effect of irradiation hardening caused by dislocation loop formation. The precipitation behavior of the irradiated steels was examined by weight analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and chemical analysis on extraction residues. These analyses suggested that irradiation caused (1) the increase of the amount of precipitates (mainly MC
), (2) increase of Cr and decrease of W contained in precipitates, (3) disappearance of MX (TaC) in ORNL9Cr and JLF-1.

The density was obtained from the mass and the shape of levitated sample by non-contact method based on the image analysis technique. X-ray diffraction experiments were performed by using the synchrotron radiation at SPring8, Japan. From structural analysis of undercooled molten silicon, first nearest neighbour coordination numbers and interatomic distances were about 5 and 2.48 with no dependence on temperature in the range of 1900-1550 K. We conclude as a result that the short-range order based on tetrahedral bonds of undercooled molten silicon does not change with the degree of undercoolings but medium-range order changes by the degree of undercoolings.
