We observed for the first time the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation in a paramagnet PuIn$$_3$$. One detected dHvA branch named $$gamma$$ corresponds to a closed band-27 electron Fermi surface, where three kinds of closed Fermi surfaces are calculated on the basis of the 5$$f$$-itinerant band model. The cyclotron mass of branch $$gamma$$ was determined as 4.8 $$m_0$$. The dHvA signals are found to be extremely reduced as a function of time due to point defects produced by $$alpha$$-decay of $$^{239}$$Pu.

We have succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of an antiferromagnet UPdGa$$_5$$ by the Ga-flux method with the off-stoichiometric composition of U : Pd : Ga = 1 : 2 : 7.3. The electronic state has been investigated by the de Haas-van Alphen experiment, indicating the similar cylindrical Fermi surfaces as in an antiferromagnet UPtGa$$_5$$. We have also studied the pressure effect by measuring the electrical resistivity. The N$$acute{rm e}$$el temperature decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at 3.1 GPa. The antiferromagnetic state is changed into the paramagnetic state above 3.1 GPa.

Fermi surface study in uranium-based intermetallic compounds

Haga, Yoshinori; Yamamoto, Etsuji; Tokiwa, Yoshifumi; Aoki, Dai*; Inada, Yoshihiko*; Settai, Rikio*; Maehira, Takahiro; Yamagami, Hiroshi*; Harima, Hisatomo*; Onuki, Yoshichika

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 39(Suppl.3), p.56 - 62, 2002/11

Fermi surfaces of uranium compounds are investigated by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. Band calculations well reproduce the Fermi surfaces of non-magnetic itinerant systems such as USi$$_{3}$$, UC, UAl$$_{3}$$. Fermi surfaces of the heavy fermion compounds, where the strong correlation between carriers are important, are also explained by band calculations, except for their unusually large mass enhancement. We have also observed dHvA oscillations in the superconducting mixed states in heavy fermion superconductors such as URu$$_{2}$$Si$$_{2}$$, UPd$$_{2}$$Al$$_{3}$$ and CeRu$$_{2}$$. A significan field dependence of cyclotron effective mass and scattering life time were observed.

We succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of an antiferromagnet UPtGa$$_5$$ by the self-flux method, and measured the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation. We found an antiferromagnetic transition at 26K from the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. Six dHvA branches were observed, ranging from 1.14$$times$$10$$^7$$ to 1.13$$times$$10$$^8$$ Oe. Fermi surfaces consist of two nearly cylindrical and two spherical Fermi surfaces. The cyclotron mass is large, ranging from 10 to 24 $$m_{rm 0}$$, which is consistent with the electronic specific heat coefficient $$gamma$$ = 57 mJ/K$$^2cdot$$mol.

UBe$$_{13}$$ is a typical heavy-fermion superconductor compound. The lowtemperature electronic specific heat coefficient has the anomalous large value, $$gamma_{exp}$$=1.1J/K$$^2$$mol, which is the largest among the heavy fermion uranium compounds. It also becomes the superconductor below T$$_C$$=0.85K. Therefore, UBe$$_{13}$$ is an important material as a strongly correlated electron system, and it is necessary to study from both sides of the theory and the experiment. The measurement suggests that the Fermi surface of UBe$$_{13}$$ may consist of small sheets. The energy band structure and the Fermi surface for UBe$$_{13}$$ are calculated by the relativistic linear APW method.

We succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of UIn$$_3$$ by the self-flux method and measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation. We confirmed the N$'e$el temperature at T$$_{rm N}$$ = 88K from both the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. We observed many dHvA branches. The Fermi surfaces are found to consist of closed Fermi surfaces and a multiply-connected Fermi surface. The cyclotron mass is relatively large, ranging from 9.8 to 33 $$m_{rm 0}$$.

We observed the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation in the heavy fermion compound CeIrIn5. The topology of the Fermi surface is found to be neary cylindrical, reflecting the unique tetragonal structure. Observed branches are well explained by the 4f-itinerant band model. The cyclotron masses are large, 20-30 m0, which are one order larger than the corresponding band masses.
