We investigate the crystal structures, phase transitions, and phase stability of undoped and Ca-modified NaNbO$$_{3}$$ through a combined analysis of high-resolution synchrotron radiation X-ray and neutron diffraction, convergent-beam electron diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is demonstrated that the antiferroelectric (AFE)-$$R$$ phase is stabilized over a wide temperature range of 200 to 800 K by Ca modification, and that the NaNbO$$_3$$ is stabilized by temperature-driven isostatic pressure accompanied by lattice expansion, whereas the Ca-modified NaNbO$$_3$$ is induced by composition-induced chemical pressure along with lattice shrinkage.

For deeper understanding of a dynamic accommodation mechanism of internal stress in pearlite originated from the lattice misfit between ferrite and cementite phases, the lattice parameter ratios of cementite were locally analyzed in detail by using the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. The EBSD analysis has revealed that lattice parameter ratios of cementite lamellae obviously differ from those of spheroidized cementite particles, which demonstrates that pearlite has a certain amount of internal stress as long as it maintains lamellar structure. The internal stress in pearlite gradually decreased during isothermal holding at 923 K after pearlitic transformation due to interfacial atomic diffusion of iron atoms. However, comparing with theoretical values under Pitsch-Petch orientation relationship, it was understood that large amount of internal stress had been already accommodated upon pearlitic transformation by introduction of misfit dislocations and structural ledges on ferrite/cementite lamellar interfaces. That is, the internal stress of pearlite is dynamically reduced by two different processes; built-in accommodation upon pearlitic transformation and additional time-dependent relaxation after pearlitic transformation. On the other hand, EBSD analysis and neutron diffraction technique gave remarkably different lattice parameters of cementite. From this result, it is concluded that various crystallographic orientation relationships between ferrite and cementite coexist in pearlite. Furthermore, elastic strain energy analysis suggests that the invariant-line criterion on ferrite/cementite interface plays an important role for the selection of orientation relationships in pearlite.

Development and research about analytical method for the study of corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steel after irradiation was conducted from the point of view for basic study of IASCC (Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking). Ion irradiations were conducted with several irradiation conditions these were irradiation temperature, radiation damage, the contents of helium (He) implantation. AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) was used to evaluate surface condition of irradiated specimens after corrosion procedure. Corrosion condition was developed to obtain good surface condition of irradiated specimens to evaluate corrosion behavior by AFM. It was succeeded and corrosion behavior at inside of grains and grain boundaries of irradiated specimens was obtained. EBSP (Electron Backscatter Diffraction Pattern) was used to evaluate relation of corrosion behavior with grain boundary character. Moreover, relations of corrosion behavior with irradiation condition were discussed.

A Comparison between neutron diffraction and EBSD images for a TlBr crystal

no journal, ,

TlBr is a compound semiconductor with a high atomic number, high density and a wide bandgap, and is being developed as a gamma-ray detector material that can be operated at room temperature and has high detection efficiency. There is neutron diffraction in order to establish a crystal quality evaluation method for improving the yield in device fabrication, but the facilities that can be implemented are limited to large facilities such as J-PARC. The Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) image, which is one of the electron beam diffractions, can be obtained with an electron microscope, but only the information on the crystal surface can be obtained. In this study, the crystal orientation image was acquired for the TlBr crystal by neutron Bragg dip imaging, which is one of the neutron diffractions, and EBSD. By comparing both images, the applicability to a simple EBSD crystal quality evaluation method was examined.
