Ricou and Vives' probe and Von Weissenfluh's probe are famous instrumentations using a permanent magnet. However, sensitivity and measurement volume of the probes show unexpected variation since demagnetization of the magnet is occurred by temperature increase up to the Curie temperature. In this study, electromagnetic probe incorporating a miniature electromagnet was newly developed to overcome such unexpected variation. The diameter and the length of the sensor was 6 mm and 155 mm, respectively. The sensitivity and the measurement volume of the probe were assessed by measurement of local velocity of flowing mercury in a square channel. To clarify the validity for the measured velocity profiles, numerical velocity profiles were calculated and compared with experiment. And the validity for the measured velocity profiles were confirmed by calculated result.

Times Cited Count:5 Percentile:48.01(Computer Science, Theory & Methods)The aerodynamics simulation code based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) using forest-of-octrees-based block-structured local mesh refinement (LMR) was implemented, and its performance was evaluated on GPU-based supercomputers. We found that the conventional Space-Filling-Curve-based (SFC) domain partitioning algorithm results in costly halo communication in our aerodynamics simulations. Our new tree cutting approach improved the locality and the topology of the partitioned sub-domains and reduced the communication cost to one-third or one-fourth of the original SFC approach. In the strong scaling test, the code achieved maximum speedup at the performance of 2207 MLUPS (mega- lattice update per second) on 128 GPUs. In the weak scaling test, the code achieved 9620 MLUPS at 128 GPUs with 4.473 billion grid points, while the parallel efficiency was 93.4% from 8 to 128 GPUs.

Zeolite particles have been used in a Cs adsorption vessel for purification of contaminated water in Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (1F). The used Cs adsorption vessels were kept in storage space on 1F site. The risk of localized corrosion of stainless steel used in the vessel was worried. To evaluate the risk of localized corrosion, using specially designed electrochemical testing apparatus was used under gamma-ray irradiation test. And, real size mock-up test conducted. The results showed the potential change caused by creation of HO
by water radiolysis decreased by zeolite particles and the enrichment of chloride ion concentration in the vessel do not propagate during dry up procedure of Cs adsorption vessel. These data indicate the risk of localized corrosion of Cs adsorption vessel may stay at considerably low level.

For a top-down scalar, for which the plant canopy serves as a distributed sink, the flux of the scalar near the canopy top are predominantly determined by sweep motions originating far above the canopy. By contrast, scalar ejection events are induced by coherent eddies generated near the canopy top. In this paper, the generation of such eddies is triggered by the downward approach of massive sweep motions to existing wide regions of weak ejective motions from inside to above the canopy.

A local tephra embedded in a hand-auger boring core drilled at near-shore of Kinugasanoike Pond about 4.6 km NE of Mt.Yakedake, one of the most active volcanoes in central Japan, is composed mainly of several kinds of volcanic glass shards (microlite-bearing, blocky, fluted and micro-vesicular types) with minor amounts of crystal minerals including quartz, plagioclase, hornblende, biotite, and pyroxene. Plant remains recovered from the horizon 10 cm below the tephra layer yield C ages of 2,331-2,295 (19.2% probability distribution) and 2,270-2,155 (76.2% probability distribution) cal yrs BP. We measured major element compositions of 241 individual glass shards using Electron Probe Micro Analyzer. They are plotted on the SiO
-K
O, SiO
-Na
O+K
O, and FeO
-K
O diagrams in a region different from those of major regional tephras distributed in central Japan. The clast and chemical compositions coincide with those of a tephra embedded in the Nakao pyroclastic flow deposits distributed about 2 km NNW of Mt. Yakedake dated as around 2,300 cal yrs BP. The tephra could be used as a local marker of 2,300 cal yrs BP in the southern part of Northern Japan Alps.

C on neutron-irradiated 316L stainless steels (SSs) at
12-14 dpa. After the tests, the microstructures near the crack tip of the specimens are examined with scanning transmission electron microscope (FE-STEM). In comparison with a previous study at
2 dpa, this result shows a less benefit of low electrochemical corrosion potential (ECP) conditions on CGR. A crack tip immersed over 1000 hours was filled with oxides, while almost no oxide film was observed near the crack front in the low-ECP conditions. In addition, a high density of deformation twins and dislocations were found near the fracture surface of the crack front. It is considered that both localized deformation and oxidation are possible dominant factors for the SCC growth in highly irradiated SSs.

An experimental study on the upward bubbly air-water flows in a vertical large-diameter square duct have been performed by using four-sensor probes. The four-sensor probe were applied in the local measurements at 3 axial positions along the flow direction to obtain interfacial area concentration, 3-D bubble velocity vector and bubble diameter. The obtained void fraction, interfacial area concentration, 3-D bubble velocity vector and bubble diameter provided valuable insight into the flow structure and will serve as a valuable database to develop the mechanistic models for interfacial area transport equation sources and sinks.

This paper introduces a laser-scanner measurement model using the statistic of laser-scanner data collected in advance for a mobile robot localization. In autonomous navigation, robots usually run based on self position in a map, and laser-scanners are useful sensors for localization. However, in human living environments like urban areas and parks, laser-scanner data is unstable due to moving objects and natural objects, and it is difficult to obtain landmarks like fixed objects. Therefore, our method make a map using statistics of laser-scanner data and calculates the laser-scanner measurement model based on the statistics. Our method is applied to Monte Carlo localization/particlelter. Because the map makes possible to use the frequency and distribution of laser-scanner data for localization, our method allows a robust localization for unstable laser scanner data. In extensive experiments, our method presented an accurate localization and a robot using our method ran stably in actual sidewalks.

At the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, seawater was injected into spent fuel pools of Unit 2-4 for the emergency cooling. Seawater might cause localized corrosion of spent fuel cladding. This would lead to leakage of not only fissile materials but also fission products from fuel cladding. The behavior, however, is not understood well. In this paper, the effects of seawater on corrosion behavior and mechanical property of were studied by using a spent fuel cladding from a BWR. We immersed the spent cladding tubes in diluted artificial seawater for 300h at 353 K, and conducted their visual, cross-sectional and strength examinations. As a localized corrosion index, the pitting potentials of specimens fabricated from the cladding were measured as functions of chloride ion concentration ranging from 20 to 2500 ppm. The visual examination showed that localized corrosion has not occurred, and cross-sectional examination showed no cracks. The strength of immersed tubes was comparable to that of non-immersed tubes. Additionally, pitting potential could not be measured over 1.0 V; pitting corrosion was hardly occurred. These results suggested that the specimens from the spent fuel cladding tube was very resistant to localized corrosion.
