-iron was investigated over the range 300-950 K at pressures of approximately 2 and 6 GPa by
neutron powder diffraction. The
Fe isotope, whose neutron scattering length is approximately half that of naturally abundant Fe, was employed to enhance the relative contribution of magnetic scattering. Curie temperatures (
) were determined to be 946(30) K, 838(50) K and 740(40) K at 2.1, 6.0 and 6.7 GPa, respectively, defining a magnetic phase boundary described by
(K) = 1043 - 49(7)
+ 1.3(1.2)
. Upon heating at 6.7 GPa, the
structural transition was observed to follow the magnetic transition. This transition sequence indicates that the magnetic phase boundary lies on the low-temperature side of the
phase boundary. Accordingly, the
transition corresponds to a structural transformation from paramagnetic bcc to paramagnetic fcc iron.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of thin films currently plays an important role in spintronics as well as magnetic recording. Regarding perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, in this article, the fundamentals, the research history, and the recent research trends are reviewed, showing specific examples with perpendicular magnetization such as magnetic multilayers, ordered alloy films, rare earth-transition metal amorphous alloy films, and inhomogeneous or granular films. The physical origins for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, including interface anisotropy due to structural symmetry breaking, magnetoelastic anisotropy due to strain, bulk-type magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and directional pair ordering of atoms, are discussed in each example.

GaC on the basis of an ab initio calculation. Taking account of the spin-orbit interaction in the LDA scheme, we obtain the XMCD spectra in excellent agreement with the recent experiment. We have analyzed the origin of each structure, and thus elucidated the mechanism of inducing the orbital polarization in the p symmetric states. We also discuss a simple sum rule connecting the XMCD spectra with the orbital moment in the p symmetric states.

We have successfully grown a single crystal of uranium intermetallic compound URhGe
. The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity shows highly anisotropic behavior. Two anomalies, which correspond to the magnetic ordering temperatures, were observed in the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements at
= 30 K and
=25 K. The magnetic susceptibility also shows a large uniaxial anisotropy with a magnetic easy-axis along the [010] direction.
