Visualization of the accurate distribution of trace uranium in environmental sample using superconducting technology

This article explains the recent research being carried out by our group on the application of superconducting transition edge sensors (TES) to detectors for synchrotron radiation X-ray analysis. We applied a TES spectrometer as a detector for microbeam X-ray measurements to determine uranium (U) distribution at the micro-scale and its chemical species in biotite obtained from the U mine. When using a conventional semiconductor detector, the X-ray fluorescence peaks of Rb and U overlap with each other due to the shortage of energy resolution. The conventional semiconductor detector could only observe the fluorescence X-ray of Rb K$$alpha$$ line, which is abundant in biotite, and could not accurately detect the signal of trace amounts of U. Meanwhile, the XRF peak of the U L$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$ line was fully separated from that of the Rb K$$alpha$$ line by using TES, which indicates that TES made it possible to perform ultra-high energy resolution analysis.

In this study, we successfully applied a transition-edge sensor (TES) spectrometer as a detector for microbeam X-ray measurements from a synchrotron X-ray light source to determine uranium (U) distribution at the micro-scale and its chemical species in biotite obtained from the U mine. It is difficult to separate the fluorescent X-ray of the U L$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$ line at 13.615 keV from that of the Rb K$$alpha$$ line at 13.395 keV in the X-ray fluorescence spectrum with an energy resolution of approximately 220 eV of the conventional silicon drift detector (SDD). Meanwhile, the fluorescent X-rays of U L$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$ and Rb K$$alpha$$ were fully separated by TES with 50 eV energy resolution at the energy of around 13 keV. The successful peak separation by TES led to an accurate mapping analysis of trace U in micro-X-ray fluorescence measurements and a decrease in the signal-to-background ratio in micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy.

Additive MOX pellets are fabricated by a conventional dry powder metallurgy method. Nd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ and Sm$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ are chosen as the additive materials to simulate the corresponding soluble fission products dispersed in MOX. Shrinkage curves of the MOX pellets are obtained by dilatometry, which reveal that the sintering temperature is shifted toward a value higher than that of the respective regular MOX. The additives, however, promote grain growth and densification, which can be explained by the effect of oxidized uranium cations covering to a pentavalent state. Ceramography reveals large agglomerates after sintering, and Electron Probe Micro-Analysis confirms that inhomogeneous elemental distribution, whereas XRD reveals a single face-centered cubic phase. Finally, by grinding and re-sintering the specimens, the cation distribution homogeneity is significantly improved, which can simulate spent nuclear fuels with soluble fission products.

In order to evaluate uranium migration behavior in Ningyo-toge area, we are examining the stability of uranium minerals using DFT calculation. As the first step, we investigated the crystal structure and unit cell composition of ningyoite with its structural details unclear, which is a major uranium mineral there. We analyzed the reported XRD pattern of ningyoite to evaluate a crystal structure of ningyoite using XRD analysis code. This XRD analysis indicates that the distance between U atoms is $$frac{1}{3}$$$$b$$ along $$b$$ axis. We constructed the structure of [CaU(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$]$$_{3}$$ with three U or Ca atoms aligned along $$b$$ axis on the basis of this examination, and conducted structural optimization with this structure as initial one using DFT calculation. The theoretical XRD pattern has the maximum peak near 30$$^{circ}$$, which the reported XRD pattern of ningyoite has. This result suggests that the structure of ningyoite is based on that of [CaU(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$]$$_{3}$$.

The permeation of hydrogen isotopes through the Hastelloy XR high-temperature alloy adopted for the heat transfer pipes of the intermediate heat exchanger in the HTTR, is one of the concerns in the hydrogen production system, which will be connected to the HTTR in the near future. The hydrogen permeation between the primary and secondary coolant through the Hastelloy XR was evaluated using the actual hydrogen concentration observed during the initial 950$$^{circ}$$C operation of the HTTR. The hydrogen permeability of the Hastelloy XR was estimated conservatively high as follows. The activation energy E$$_{0}$$ and pre-exponential factor F$$_{0}$$ of the permeability of hydrogen were E$$_{0}$$ = 65.8 kJ/mol and F$$_{0}$$ = 7.8$$times$$10$$^{-9}$$m$$^{3}$$(STP)/(m$$ast$$s$$ast$$Pa$$^{0.5}$$), respectively, in the temperature range from 707K to 900K.

Effects of swift heavy ion irradiation on magnetic properties of Fe-Rh alloy

We have performed swift heavy ion irradiations in Fe-50at.%Rh alloys at room temperature. Before and after the irradiations, the magnetic properties and the lattice structure are measured using Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) and X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), respectively. We have also performed X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurement near the Fe K-edge at the synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8, to examine the irradiation-induced ferromagnetic state near the specimen surface. We have found that the swift heavy ion irradiations induce the ferromagnetic state in Fe-50at.%Rh alloy below the antiferromagnetism-ferromagnetism transition temperature of the unirradiated alloy and the lattice expasion by 0.3%. For the specimens irradiated with swift heavy ions, we observe the XMCD spectra correponding to ferromagnetisim, which depend on the mass of irradiating ions and/or irradiation fluence. Effects of energy loss through electronic excitation and elastic collisions on lattice and magnetic structures of Fe-Rh alloy are discussed.

Layered transition metal hydroxide salt (LTMHS) is a group of anion-exchangeable layered compounds. Although LTMHSs have recentely attracted attention of researches on anion exchange and intercalation, very limited numbers of reports have been published on their synthesis, characteristics, and applications. This paper describes basic characteristics of a new LTMHS, nickel-copper hydroxide acetate. Hydrothermal Heating of an aqueous solution containing nickel acetate, copper acetate, and hydrogen peroxide to 150$$^{o}$$C for 4h yielded a layered compound with an analytical composition of NiCu(OH)$$_{3.1}$$(OCOCH$$_{3}$$)$$_{0.9}$$ 0.9H$$_{2}$$O. This compound does not take up Cl$$^{-}$$ and NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ in aqueous solution but takes up multivalent anions and shows high selectivity in uptake of toxic SeO$$_{3}$$$$^{2-}$$ and AsO$$_{4}$$$$^{3-}$$. This compound may find applicarion in the removal of those toxic anions form natural water and wastewater rich in Cl$$^{-}$$ and NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$.

The diagnostic system of JFT-2M has consisted of about 30 individual diagnostic instruments,which were used to study the plasma production, control, equilibrium, stability, confinement, plasma heating by NBI and/or RF (LH, ICRF, ECH) and current drive by RF. In these instruments, the motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimeter, charge exchanged recombination spectroscopy (CXRS), heavy-ion beam probe (HIBP), time of flight (TOF) neutral particle analyzer, etc. have contributed to make clear the improved mechanism of confinement such as H-mode and High Recycling Steady (HRS) H-mode, and to search the operational region of these modes.The infrared TV camera system and lost ion probe have played a very important role to investigate the heat load onto the walls due to ripple loss particles and escaping ions from core plasma, respectively.

Synthesis and characterization of copper hydroxide acetate with a layered discoid crystal

Layered transition metal hydroxide salt (LTMHS) is a group of anion-exchangeable layered compounds. LTMHSs have lately attraced attention of researchs on anion exchange and intercalation but very limited numbers of reports have been published on their synthesis, characteristics, and application. This study reports basic properties of a layered copper hyroxide acetate synthesized by a method modified from that of the previous studies. Titration of copper acetate solution with a dilute NaOH solution to pH 6.5 and subsequent aging at 313 K yielded a layered copper hydroxide acetate. This compound has some properties similar to those of the previously known copper hydroxide acetate, Cu$$_{2}$$(OH)$$_{3}$$(OCOCH$$_{3}$$)H$$_{2}$$O. The present copper hydroxide acetate is dissimilar to the previous compound in morphology, stability of bonding between the interlayer acetate ions and the matrix hydroxides, and reaction with anions in aqueous solutions.

The high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) is capable of producing a massive quantity of hydrogen with no carbon dioxide emission during its production by a thermo chemical IS (Iodine-Sulphur) process. The HTTR (High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor), which is the first high-temperature gas-cooled reactor in Japan, will be connected to some heat utilization system in the near future. The thermo chemical IS process is one of the progressive candidates. The metallic material of the heat transfer tube of the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) and liner in the concentric hot gas duct in the HTTR-IS system, which allows usage in high-temperature conditions, is the nickel-based high-temperature alloy Hastelloy XR. Since the coolant helium contains small amounts of impurities, it is necessary to control the chemical composition in order to minimize corrosion of the Hastelloy XR. Major corrosion phenomena of the Hastelloy XR are carburization, decarburization, oxidation, and carbon deposition depending upon the particular gas composition and its temperature. The carburization and decarburization phenomena can be restricted by controlling the carbon activity and oxygen partial pressure. This paper describes the effect of each coolant impurity for the carburization and decarburization. Also a chemical composition limit was evaluated to avoid the Hastelloy XR corrosion.
