To validate lead (Pb) nuclear cross sections, a series of integral experiments to measure lead void reactivity worth was conducted systematically in three fast spectra with different fuel compositions on the Comet critical assembly of the National Criticality Experiments Research Center. Previous experiments in a high-enriched uranium (HEU)/Pb and a low-enriched uranium (LEU)/Pb systems had been performed in 2016 and 2017, respectively. A follow-on experiment in a plutonium (Pu)/Pb system has been completed. The Pu/Pb system was constructed using lead plates and weapons grade plutonium plates that had been used in the Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) of Argonne National Laboratory until the 1990s. Furthermore, the HEU/Pb system was re-examined on the Comet critical assembly installed newly with a device that can guarantee the gap reproducibility with a higher accuracy and precision, and then the experimental data was re evaluated. Using the lead void reactivity worth measured in these three cores with different fuel compositions, the latest nuclear data libraries, JENDL 4.0 and ENDF/B VIII.0, were tested with the Monte Carlo calculation code MCNP version 6.1. As a result, the calculations by ENDF/B-VIII.0 were confirmed to agree with lead void reactivity worth measured in all the cores. It was furthermore found that the calculations by JENDL 4.0 overestimate by more than 20% for the Pu/Pb core while being in good agreements for the HEU/Pb and LEU/Pb cores.

Champion data comparison in nuclear research institutes in Europe, the U. S., and Japan

Yanagisawa, Kazuaki; Cutler, D.*

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, 287(3), p.879 - 886, 2011/03

Bibliometric analysis was carried out for champion data comparisons among prestigious nuclear research institutes (PNRI) existed in Japan, the U. S., France and Germany. The analysis was relied on database INIS (IAEA), ECD (DOE), WOS (Thomson) and SCOPUS (Elsevier). INIS is advanced, key ex-post evaluating tool for determining general research paper-based champion. Over the 30-year time span of research paper publication, the world champion among 11 PNRI is JAERI confirmed by INIS but ORNL confirmed by ECD, WOS and SCOPUS, the latter two collected journal submitted research paper. Results from analytical tools used in bibliometric studies should be viewed with careful consideration to learn of any influencing factors because different characteristics exhibited by individual databases can sometimes generate conflicting bibliometric results. This was true among INIS, ECD, WOS and SCOPUS when looking at trends especially between 5-year periods.

Champion data comparison in nuclear research institutes in Europe, the U.S., and Japan

Yanagisawa, Kazuaki; Cutler, D.*; Brulet, C.*

Proceedings of 3rd European Conference on Management of Technology (EuroMOT 2008) (Internet), 8 Pages, 2008/00

A consideration of nuclear knowledge management was made from the viewpoint research evaluation. This time, by using research papers stocked by JAERI (Present address: Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)) and 8 prestige foreign research institutes, an institutional comparison was performed by a bibliometric method. It is revealed that a nuclear knowledge in JAERI and 8 resembled foreign research institutes is retained successfully not only in INIS but also in ECD over 50 years. The retained knowledge is revealed to be useful for executing an institutional comparison. We found that the champion is ORNL during the period 1978-2002. JAERI is in the 2nd rank in INIS but 7th rank in ECD.

Educational knowledge retention in nuclear research institutes in Japan, the U.S. and Europe

Yanagisawa, Kazuaki; Cutler, D.*; Brulet, C.*

Transactions of NESTet 2008 (CD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2008/00

A valuable and retainable knowledge born by a result of research activity in a nuclear institute should be stocked explicitly in the form of research paper. This time, by using research papers stocked by JAERI (Present address: Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)) and 8 resembled foreign research institutes, an institutional comparison was performed by a bibliometric method. It is revealed from the present bibliometric study that a nuclear knowledge in JAERI and 8 resembled foreign research institutes is retained successfully not only in INIS but also in ECD over 50 years. The retained knowledge is revealed to be useful for executing an institutional comparison. Within the present scope one concludes that the champion between JAERI and 8 resembled foreign research institutes is ORNL during the period 1978-2002. JAERI is in the 2nd position in INIS but is in the 7th position in ECD.
