The PFCI will be tested at JAEA Naka, inside the bore of the ITER Central Solenoid Model Coil. The main test program are the DC characterization of the conductor, the measurement of AC losses in conductor, the hydraulic characterization, the stability and the quench propagation, and the effects of cycling electromagnetic load. Based on and in support of this test program, an extensive campaign of predictive analysis has been initiated on a subset of the above-mentioned test program items and the results of the comparison of selected predictions from different laboratories will be presented and discussed. A sudden quench at 5.7-6.2 K and 45 kA is predicted. The computed temperature increase at the winding outlet is about 0.5 K for the pulse. These results will be compared with the experiment and used for an accurate prediction of the PF coil performance.

The Central Solenoid (CS) model coil programme has been carrying out since 1992 as a back born project in International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Engineering Design Activity (EDA). The CS model coil programme has a plan to develop the toroidal fieled (TF) insert to demonstrate the conductor performance of ITER real TF coils under 13 T of magnetic flux density. The fabrication of TF insert was completed on May 2001 by D.V.Efremov Scientific Research Institute for Electrophysical Apparatus(Efremov institute) at St. Petersburg, Russia. Experiments including the cooldown and warmup were completed November 2001 at JAERI Naka. TF insert was achieved to charge up to 13T with 46kA without training under the back up magnetic field by the CS model coil.

In the Engineering Design Activities of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), Toroidal Field (TF) Insert have been developed and tested successfully. In the experiment, pressure drop performance of TF insert was investigated. There were two purposes for the investigation. One is to verify the pressure drop prediction using correlations proposed by various researchers. Second is to observe a behavior of pressure drop under the electromagnetic force. The pressure drops of TF insert decreased by around 12% during current-carrying operation of 46kA at 13T. After several current-carrying operation, the friction factor of TF insert has finally reached a value which is around 12% lower than that of virgin state and was not recovered even if there were zero current. It is considered that a deformation of cable cross section inside the conductor jacket appears due to electromagnetic force and a new flow path in the jacket is generated.
