$$^{33}$$S nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of uranium disulfide $$beta$$-US$$_2$$

Uranium disulfide $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ showing a semimetal-to-semiconductor crossover has been investigated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique for $$^{33}$$S nuclei with the nuclear spin of $$I=3/2$$. Since the natural concentration 0.76% of NMR active $$^{33}$$S nuclei is too dilute, the isotopic enrichment to $$sim$$50% has been carried out for the single crystal growth. The $$^{33}$$S NMR spectra have been successfully obtained using a single crystal of $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ with external fields along the crystallographic $$c$$ axis. The S sites assignments have been made based on these NMR spectra.

Drastic change in ferromagnetic ground state associated with pressure-induced metal-insulator transition in $$beta$$-US$$_2$$

Paramagnetic $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ is a semiconductor with the band gap of 90 K. The applying pressure on $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ induces a weak ferromagnetic state above 0.5 GPa and the phase is understood as "induced moment ferromagnetism". In this study, we have measured the magnetization in $$beta$$-US$$_2$$ across the insulator-metal transition at 5 GPa with a ceramic anvil high pressure cell. The spontaneous magnetic moment is strongly enhanced at the transition pressure from 0.04 to 0.4 $${mu}_{rm B}$$/U. The ferromagnetic state may be stabilized by the larger carrier concentration.

We have designed a miniature ceramic anvil high pressure cell (mCAC) for magnetic measurements at pressures up to 12.6 GPa in a commercial superconducting quantum interference (SQUID) magnetometer. In this conference, we will shows details of the mCAC and our recent modifications in the cell. Also, we will show results of high pressure magnetic measurements on rare earth compound YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. We find that the pressure-induced phase has strong uniaxial anisotropy.

We report a dc magnetization study of the critical phenomenon around the ferromagnetic transition temperature $$T_{rm C}$$ in high-quality single crystals of uranium ferromagnetic superconductors UGe$$_2$$ and URhGe. Although the values of the critical exponent $$beta$$ and $$delta$$ for the magnetization in UGe$$_2$$ and URhGe are close to those in the 3D magnets, the values of the critical exponent $$gamma$$ for the magnetic susceptibility are close to unity, that expected from the mean field theory. The unconventional critical scaling of magnetization in UGe$$_2$$, and URhGe cannot be explained via previous approaches to critical phenomena.

We report dc magnetic measurements on YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ at pressures above 10 GPa using a miniature ceramic anvil cell. YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ shows a pressure-induced transition from the non-magnetic to a magnetic phase at 8 GPa. We find a spontaneous dc magnetization in the pressure-induced phase above 9.4 GPa. The pressure dependence of the ferromagnetic transition temperature $$T_{rm C}$$ and the spontaneous magnetic moment $${mu}_0$$ at 2.0 K have been determined. The pressure-induced phase has strong Ising-type uniaxial anisotropy.

UGe$$_2$$ is a ferromagnet with the Curie temperature of 54 K at ambient pressure. The superconductivity appears in the pressure region of 1.0-1.6 GPa where UGe$$_2$$ is in the ferromagnetic state. Ferromagnetic state disappears above $$P_c$$ =1.6 GPa. In this study, we have measured the dc-magnetization up to 4.1 GPa using the ceramic anvil high pressure cell. We confirmed the maximum at $$T_{max}$$ in the temperature dependence of the dc magnetic susceptibility. With increasing pressure, $$T_{max}$$ is increased from 24 K at 1.9 GPa to 32 K at 2.6 GPa. The peak structure around $$T_{max}$$ becomes broader with increasing pressure and disappears above 4 GPa. The metamagnetic transition field $$H_m$$ increases rapidly with increasing pressure. We discuss the experimental results with the phenomenological spin-fluctuation theory.
