The generation and detection of single photons play a central role in the experimental foundation of quantum mechanics and measurement theory. An effcient and high-quality single-photon source is thought to be necessary to realize quantum key distribution, quantum repeaters and photonic quantum information processing. We found the identication and formation of ultra-bright, room temperature, photo-stable single photon sources in silicon carbide (SiC). The single photon source consists of an intrinsic defect which is known as the carbon antisite vacancy pair, created by carefully optimized electron irradiation and annealing of ultra pure SiC. An extreme brightness (2$$times$$10$$^{6}$$ counts/s) resulting from polarization rules and a high quantum effciency is obtained in the bulk without resorting to the use of a cavity or plasmonic structure.

A semi-empirical model is derived from operational data collected aboard the International Space Station (ISS) with the U.S. tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC). The model provides daily and cumulative mission predictions of the operational dose equivalent that space-crew may receive from galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) and trapped radiation (TR) sources as a function of the ISS orbit.

The ENDF/B-VII.1 library is our latest recommended evaluated nuclear data file for use in nuclear science and technology applications, and incorporates advances made in the five years since the release of ENDF/B-VII.0. These advances focus on neutron cross sections, covariances, fission product yields and decay data, and represent work by the US Cross Section Evaluation Working Group (CSEWG) in nuclear data evaluation that utilizes developments in nuclear theory, modeling, simulation, and experiment. It features extension of covered nuclei, covariance data for 190 nuclei, R-matrix analyses of neutron reactions on light nuclei, updates for some medium-heavy and actinoid nuclei, etc. Criticality benchmark tests with a transport simulation code MCNP shows improved performances.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

It is investigated whether differences in the MHD stability of the pedestal, including effects of plasma rotation and aspect ratio, can explain the results of JET/JT-60U similarity experiments. As a result, these mechanisms fail to explain the experimental observations. Therefore, the effects of ripple losses on H-mode performance were investigated. The analysis shows that ripple losses of thermal ions can affect H-mode plasma performance very sensitively. Orbit-following simulations indicate that losses due to diffusive transport give rise to a wide radial distribution of enhanced ion thermal transport, whereas non-diffusive losses have a very edge-localized distribution. In predictive transport simulations with an energy sink term in the continuity equation for the ion pressure representing non-diffusive losses, reduced performance as well as an increase in the ELM frequency are demonstrated.

An instrument based upon high-resolution $$gamma$$-ray measurements has beentested for more than 1 year at the TokaiReprocessing Facility for determinationof plutonium concentration by K-edge absorption densitometry and for determination of plutonium isotopic fractions bytransmission-corrected passive $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry. The nondestructive assay instrument was designed and built atLos Alamos National Laboratory for theTokai Advanced Safeguards Technology Exercise (TASTEX). It was used at Tokai forthe timely assay of more than 100 productsolution samples daring the TASTEX evaluations The results were compared tosolution samples during the TASTEXaluations. The results were compared toreference values obtained by conventionaldestructive analysis of these samples. The precision and accuracy of plutoniumconcentrations measured by the K-edgetechnique are shown to be with in 0.6% (1$$sigma$$) in these applications. The precisionsand accuracies of the isotopic fractions. determined by these passive

This paper describes the results of dedicated experiments carried out in JET, where H-mode plasmas properties were studied for varying levels of toroidal field ripple, in the range from 0.08% (natural $$delta$$$$_{rm BT}$$ for JET) up to $${sim}$$1%. The experiments were carried out in the ELMy H-mode regime with q$$_{95}$$ =3 to 3.6, to investigate the effect of $$delta$$$$_{rm BT}$$ on pedestal and core properties of the plasma. These experiments show that toroidal field ripple has a clear effect on H-mode properties, although the physics mechanisms at the root of the reduced energy confinement with $$delta$$$$_{rm BT}$$ have not been identified unambiguously. Plasma density pump out and reduction of the global energy confinement is found for $$delta$$$$_{rm BT}$$ $$sim$$ 0.5%, but the magnitude of this effect depends on plasma parameters. Ripple may also affect pedestal pressure, as well as size and frequency of ELMs. Plasma toroidal rotation was also strongly affected by ripple.
