Prompt $$gamma$$ rays induced by thermal neutron capture on an enriched $$^{107}$$Pd sample were analyzed to obtain the thermal neutron capture cross section for this nuclide. Intensities of prompt $$gamma$$-ray transitions feeding the ground state were summed to determine a lower limit for the thermal neutron capture cross section of 9.16$$pm$$0.27 b. There have been no previously reported values for this cross section. Our measured value is five times larger than evaluations of this cross section, which are based on resonance parameter data.

Cross section of thermal-neutron capture reaction by$$^{99}$$Tc

Furutaka, Kazuyoshi; Harada, Hideo; Nakamura, Shoji; Kato, Toshio; Fujii, Toshiyuki*; Yamana, Hajimu*; Raman, S.*

Journal of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences, 6(3), p.283 - 286, 2005/12

Results of a series of study are presented to accurately determine cross section of$$^{99}$$Tc(n,gamma)$$^{100}$$Tc reaction for thermal neutron. An activation method in which $$gamma$$ rays in$$^{100}$$Ru are analyzed, as well as an analysis of ground-state transitions in$$^{100}$$Tc are employed. To reduce uncertainties of the results in an activation method, an attempt was made to determine $$gamma$$-ray emission probabilities accurately. Though accuracies of the results were improved, the uncertainties are still larger than the requested values. Possible improvements are suggested.

Determination of the$$^{99}$$Tc (thermal n, $$gamma$$) $$^{100}$$Tc Reaction Cross Section from the prompt $$gamma$$-Ray Yields

Furutaka, Kazuyoshi; Harada, Hideo; Raman, S.*

Nuclear Data for Science and Technology (ND2004), p.1454 - 1457, 2004/09

To determine thermal neutron capture cross section of$$^{99}$$Tc from the yields of prompt $$gamma$$ rays to the ground state of$$^{100}$$Tc, analysis of the existing data was done. $$gamma$$-ray spectra were obtained with a coaxial intrinsic Ge detector positioned inside a NaI(Tl) annuls which is optically divided into two halves. The Ge detector was operated either in the Compton-Suppressed (CS) or the pair-spectrometer (PS) mode. Peak analysis was done for each $$gamma$$ ray observed both in the CS and the PS modes. Combining the results of the analyses in both modes, a total of 1100 $$gamma$$ rays were identified to be originated from$$^{100}$$Tc. From the obtained data a partial decay scheme was constructed, and six $$gamma$$ rays were identified as transitions to the ground state. From the intensities of these $$gamma$$ rays, the lower limit of the cross section is obtained as 21.37$$pm$$0.62b.

Neutron capture cross sections of long-lived fission products (LLFP) are important quantities as fundamental data for the study of nuclear transmutation of radioactive wastes. Previously obtained thermal-neutron capture $$gamma$$-ray data were analyzed to deduce the partial neutron-capture cross sections of LLFPs including 99Tc, 93Zr, and 107Pd for thermal neutrons. By comparing the decay $$gamma$$-ray data and prompt $$gamma$$-ray data for 99Tc, the relation between the neutron-capture cross section deduced by the two different methods was studied. For the isotopes 93Zr and 107Pd, thermal neutron-capture $$gamma$$-ray production cross sections were deduced for the first time. The level schemes of 99T, 93Zr, and 107Pd have also been constructed from the analyzed data and compared with previously reported levels. This work has been done under the cooperative program "Neutron Capture Cross Sections of Long-Lived Fission Products (LLFPs)" by Japan nuclear cycle development institute (JNC) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Determination of the$$^{99}$$Tc (Thermal n, Gamma)$$^{100}$$Tc Reaction Cross Section from the Prompt Gamma-Ray Yields

Furutaka, Kazuyoshi; Harada, Hideo; Raman, S.*

AIP Conference Proceedings 769, p.1454 - 1457, 2004/00

Analyses were made of the prompt $$gamma$$ rays emitted in the thermal neutron capture reaction by $$^{99}$$Tc to determine the reaction cross section. From the obtained data, a partial decay scheme was constructed which consists of 88 $$gamma$$ rays and 36 bound states. Six $$gamma$$ rays were assigned as the transitions to the ground state of $$^{100}$$Tc. From the intensities of these six $$gamma$$ rays, a lower limit of the reaction cross section was obtained to be 21.37$$pm$$0.68b. Through a least-squres fit to the level energies, the neutron separation energy of $$^{100}$$Tc was determined as 6765.20$$pm$$0.04 keV. $$gamma$$ rays in $$^{100}$$Ru emitted following the beta- decay of the reaction product $$^{100}$$Tc were also analyzed. The inferred cross section is 22.8$$pm$$1.8b.

IST 2005 Abstracts, 2511, p.51, P. 51, 2004/00

In order to experimentally determine cross section of thermal-neutron capture reaction by$$^{99}$$Tc, the following studies have been performed: (1) Measurement of the cross section using an activation method in which $$gamma$$ rays in$$^{100}$$Ru were observed, (2) Measurement of emission probabilities of $$gamma$$ rays in$$^{100}$$Ru, and (3) Measurement of the Cross section from yields of the prompt $$gamma$$ rays emitted in the reaction. In this presentation, details of these studies will be reviewed, and the obtained results will be compared to others. Possible improvements of the experimental methods will also be presented.

We have studied the primary and secondary $$gamma$$ rays (a total of ~1100$) in $$^{100}$$Tc following thermal-neutron capture by the radioactive $$^{99}$$Tc isotope. A fraction of these $$gamma$$ rays have been incorporated into the corresponding level scheme consisting of 36 levels in $$^{100}$$Tc. The determined neutron separation energy Sn for $$^{100}$$Tc is 6765.20$$pm$$0.04 keV. By summing the cross sections of all ground-state transitions, we have obtained 21.37$$pm$$0.62b as a lower limit of the thermal-neutron capture cross section for $$^{99}$$Tc. We have also determined the capture cross section by examining the 540- and 591-keV $$gamma$$ rays in$$^{100}$$Ru emitted following the beta- decay of$$^{100}$$Tc. The inferred thermal-neutron capture cross section for 99Tc is 22.8$$pm$$1.8b.

To evaluate neutron cross-section data of minor actinides, separated actinide samples and dosimetry samples were irradiated at the Dounreay Prototype Fast Reactor for 492 effective full power days. Based on the burnup calculations of major actinide and dosimetry samples, the neutron flux distribution and the flux level were adjusted at the locations where minor actinide samples were irradiated. The burnup calculations were carried out for minor actinides using the determined flux distribution and flux level. This paper discusses the burnup calculations and the validation of minor actinide cross-section data in evaluated nuclear data libraries. We find that we can obtain reliable FIMA (fission per initial metallic atom) values by using the $$^{148}$$Nd method except that the uncertainties in the FIMA values are large for $$^{234}$$U, $$^{238}$$Pu, Am isotopes, and Cm isotopes because the $$^{148}$$Nd yields are known poorly for these isotopes and are probably overestimated. For these isotopes, measurements to improve the fission-yield data are needed. We also find that, in general, the JENDL-3.2 nuclear data for the minor actinides are adequate for the conceptual design study of transmutation systems. But, there are some nuclides (especially $$^{238}$$Pu and $$^{242}$$Pu) for which new measurements are needed particulary if the minor actinides constitute a major part of the nuclear fuel.
