Neutron diffraction data of deuterated poly-N,N,-dimethylacrylamide (PDMAA) hydrogel were measured at temperatures of 10 - 290 K in order to investigate the structure and properties of water in the hydrogel. Diffraction peaks observed below 270 K indicate the existence of a solid ice in the hydrogel. The positions of some peaks from the ice are lower than those in ordinary hexagonal ice (Ih). The lower shifts of the peaks indicates that the lattice constants of the c-axis in the ice are about 0.3% higher than those in ice Ih, whereas those of the a-axis are almost consist. The results show that bulk of a low-density ice crystal exists in the PDMAA hydrogel. The water molecules, which have a significant interaction with the polymer chains, play an important role in the chemical and mechanical properties of the hydrogel.

Our neutron scattering study and using representational analysis revealed the magnetic structure in phase II of NdB$$_4$$ with Shastry-Sutherland lattice. We found that the magnetic structure is described by the mixture of the basis vector of $$Gamma_2$$ and $$Gamma_4$$ representation with the magnetic moment of about 2$$mu_B$$. We observed pseudo-quartet CEF state and the temperature dependence by means of neutron inelastic scattering below 5 meV.

In order to elucidate the 5$$f$$-electron states in the heavy electron superconductor NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, neutron scattering experiments of the rare earth based iso-structural family have been carried out. The observed crystal field excitations of PrPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and NdPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ were analyzed via the crystal field Hamiltonian with tetragonal symmetry, diagonalized analytically. The experimentally obtained crystal field parameters $$A_{lm}$$were very similar in CePd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, PrPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, and NdPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, indicating a common effective charge potential in this series. We succeeded to clarify the 5$$f$$ electron states of NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ in comparison with these results.
